Breastfeeding Reduces Rheumatoid Arthritis Risk of Moms

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Women can cut their risk of rheumatoid arthritis by 50 percent simply by breastfeeding for a year or longer, according to a study conducted by researchers from Malmo University Hospital in Sweden, and published in the “Annals of Rheumatic Diseases.”

Scientists have wondered whether breastfeeding might affect the risk of rheumatoid arthritis, because it stimulates the production of two hormones that may have some connection to the disease. While it raises levels of oxytocin – which has been linked with lowered blood pressure and stress hormone levels and general well-being – it also raises levels of prolactin, which stimulates the immune system.

Bristol Fundraising Event 7th Feb

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

On Sat. 7th Feb. there’s going to be an all day event to raise money for refugees from war-torn countries( eg. at the moment, Gaza). People get sponsored, or if they prefer make a donation to go along to Christchurch at the top of Broad Street (the Church with the quarter-jack clock) and either play something on their instrument, sing, create some art or write a poem ! – It doesn’t matter if you are a complete beginner in one of these fields, or have been doing it for years. The idea is that it ’s an opportunity to give something of yourself that will really help these desperate people.

There will be tea, coffee, cakes etc all day, and a very friendly atmosphere!

In the evening there will be an exhibition of the art, which could also be sold to raise more money and then a concert which will include world music, folk, jazz/rock and classical. — Something for everyone! One or two of the poems will also be read during the concert.
Do come ! It looks like being great fun, and extremely worthwhile!

Stop Nappy Rash!

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Use washable nappies!

The Amerian Medical Association has published a research paper showing that the incidence of nappy rash in babies is significantly reduced in babies wearing cloth nappies.

The research shows that 54% of babies in reusable nappies are afflicted by nappy rash but only 18% of babies in cloth suffer.

Another good reason to make the switch to cloth nappies.
