Just in at the Natural Nursery is this lovely new colourway; Charcoal Grey and Black go with almost anything and are perfect for mums and dads. We have been asking about babywearing dads on the Natural Nursery Facebook Page and some mums say that dads are really happy to carry their children but they prefer the slings to be in neutral colours.

Alison sent us in this review that tells you a lot about the Performance Carrier:

“I am delighted with my Ergo Performance. My baby is a really ‘hot-blooded’ little boy and both he and I were overheating with wrap carriers. We both stay nice and cool with this.

My husband really likes this carrier as it looks quite sporty and he has found it really comfy to use (6″1, size Large). I on the other hand am only 5’2″/size 10 and also find this carrier very comfy. Of note, the shoulder straps are different to the original – they are not thick and squishy but firmer and thinner. However, I have never found them uncomfy even after hours. They are also more tapered and come in closer together. I was worried this might mean they rubbed on my neck. However, having tried both the Performance and Original I found these actually a much better fit – the original straps are very bulky and wide-set and meant it kind of hung off my outer shoulders and pulled. So some smaller ladies may find the straps rub on their neck but I’ve actually found this a much better fit.

Although this is not a ‘waterproof’ carrier, I have survived 30mins in a big downpour. I had my regular-sized waterproof coat on over and was able to do this up at the bottom (below the Ergo) to cover my son’s legs. I put the Ergo hood up, tucked his arms in and scampered home! I was impressed to find an essentially dry baby underneath when I got in, who had enjoyed the adventure! The lightweight nature of this carrier also meant it then dried out quickly.

Overall, a functional, versatile carrier which is comfy for 2 very different sized people and also very easy to adjust between us.”

Customer Product Review – Ergo Performance Cargo Pack

This great nappy / day pack fits onto the Ergo Performance baby carrier which is the lightweight Ergo. It buckles onto the carrier allowing you to carry all you day to day needs with you.

The performance cargo pack is made of a rugged, durable polyester/cotton blend. The cargo pack attaches to the side buckles on either of the performance carriers, and features a generous main compartment with a side pocket, and a mesh outside pocket.

With a velcro flap, the cargo pack can attach to the carrier‘s waist belt when worn in any position. It can also be used independently with the adjustable and detachable shoulder strap.

This is what a customer at the Natural Nursery had to say about the Ergo Performance Cargo Pack

Great not to have to carry a separate bag and useful to have the option of attaching the shoulder strap to use as a handbag without the carrier.

However, it’s not very big – will fit one or two disposable nappies and some wipes etc but not much space if you are using washables.

So, good for nipping out to the shops and having a “just in case” kit with you but would need more space if you are out and about for the day.

“Great Carrier

I’ve ordered this carrier as a replacement for my Eco AngelPack. There was nothing wrong with my existing carrier, but I always wanted an Ergo and can afford it now, but couldn’t then (it is pricey). I chose Ergo performance because I was promised it weighs less than standard ergo and I loved the green colour
I received the package promptly and I have to say that I am delighted with the carrier. It has nothing majorly different from my AngelPack, but it is better in many ways. For example, ergo is all in one piece – you can’t lose a chest strap. It’s easy to pop on and off. And there’s A LOT of extra strap length. Unfortunately my old carrier didn’t have very long straps, so hip carry was not possible.

The booklet was very helpful, explaining how to get baby on back, front or hip. Overall I’m satisfied with it. Rain hood is also nice. Bottom line – it is expensive, but I feel it is comfortable and well made so worth it. Service was very good too.

Here is another lovely review for the Ergo Baby Carrier from the Natural Nursery.
We are really pleased with this carrier.

My 6 month old loves being in it, and after only a couple of weeks use has cottoned on that when the sleep hood goes on, it is time for her to go off…

It is comfy to wear and very portable. The only issue we have had is initial protestations as our baby was used to facing forwards in a baby bjorn, but we seem to have got over this.
Natural Nursery despatched promtly with good communication. I would recommend them.

Ergo carriers should be issued when a child is born. I carried my first child in an original Ergo 7 years ago very successfully until he was 3, or maybe even 4, on occassions.

This sport version was an essential for my second child as my husband is 6 foot 7 and so very limited by the carriers that he can use. We are both able to use this carrier, with comfort and ease. Worth every penny.

This is a must buy with the carrier. I had to order them after the carrier as sure enough when I used the carrier for the first time my baby starting sucking on the straps. These pads offer a little bit of protection.

Ergo Sucking Pads

We knew from the state of another sling our baby had been riding in that he was going to suck, and suck he has. It’s so much easier to just wash these small pieces than the whole sling, which is a good thing as the Ergo Performance instructions discourage you from washing the whole carrier as it will damage the material.

We chose to buy two, as we use the carrier everyday, so we always have some on us when one pair is being washed.

They are soft, hygienic and for us and our sucky baby, an essential additional to the Performance Carrier. Plus, they were much cheaper on Natural Nursery than other sites we looked at.

So says our latest product tester, who tried out a pair of Baby Legs baby leg warmers on her two children, aged 11 months and 3 years.

Here is what Emma had to say:

My baby boy Harry is 11 months, and I find since his crawling around his knees are always getting sore and red. Plus his little legs are always freezing.

Testing Baby legs has been brilliant.

We have used them for just over a week at the moment bar the 1 day they were in the wash.

They are fantastic. They have kept his legs warm, and although they resemble something a girl would wear, boys can easily get away with them.

They are super soft, and despite me thinking they would roll down while being worn, they actually didn’t.
I would give this product 10 out of 10.

My daughter who is nearly 3 has also managed to test them and gave them the thumbs up.

This wonderful picture of Orlando Bloom wearing his 5 week old baby in an ErgoBaby Baby Carrier just shows how easy it is for new dads to be hands on and enjoy some cuddle time with their newborn.

The photo, published in the Daily Mail, shows Orlando Bloom walking confidently with his baby, prior to enjoying lunch with Miranda Kerr.

It is great to see a national paper publishing such a positive parenting story, but I do wish that they hadn’t commented upon the new mother’s figure.

Ergo Performance Baby Carrier

This is a fantastic sling and although it is expensive i think its worth every penny. My 4 month old is a hefty 21 lbs and carrying him in the baby bjorn was really hurting my shoulders. However with the ergo i can carry him for ages in the front carrying position without sore shoulders.

It takes a little while to adjust all the straps to a comfy position but once adjusted its very easy to use. My baby does seem more comfortable with me using it then my husband, he seems to sit a little too low in the sling with my husband using. I’m sure a bit of strap fiddling would resolve this minor issue though.
The pocket is really handy for wallet/ phone but i’m now in debate whether to splash out on the cargo pack or not….

Ergo Sucking Pads

I didn’t initially buy these with my carrier but the first time I used the sling my baby soaked the strap by sucking on it.So i got a couple of pairs of these and I’m happy they will prolong the life of the carrier and be a bit more comfortable and hygienic for my baby.

They are nice and soft against my babys face too when he falls asleep in the sling and slumps a bit.

We know that the Ergo Baby Carrier is one of our best-selling baby carriers but now there are so many versions available, it can be a little confusing working out which one is right for you.

Here is a simple explaination of the different types of Ergo and the main differences between them.

All Ergo Baby Carriers

Provide ergonomic support for both you and your baby

The Ergo Baby Carrier

This is the orginal New Generation Ergo that replaced the Classic Ergo several years ago.

This is the Ergo baby sling that I used with my daughter until she was 4 1/2 years old, for up 2 hours at a time.

It is available in a range of colours to suit every style and is made from 100% cotton fabric.

It has a waist belt circumference from 25″ to 43″ and fits from 5′ to 6’5″ body height with adjustable shoulder and chest straps.

The Organic Ergo Baby Carrier

This is the same design as the ErgoBaby Carrier, but made with certified organic cotton.

It comes in a range of colours, many with beautiful embroidery.

It fits the same sizes at the normal ErgoBaby carrier (waist 25″ to 43″ and height 5′ to 6’5″) and can be used with the waist extender to give a comfortable fit if required.

The Ergo Sport

Designed to appeal to those with a more rugged or urban style, the Ergo Sport will fit taller men and women.

The Performance Ergo is made from highly breathable fabrics with a cotton mesh lining to keep you and baby cool.

It has shaped shoulder straps for a close fit and lightly padded for comfort. fit from 5’ to 6’6” in height and the waist belt extends to 48” (5” longer than standard Ergo) – please note this carrier cannot be used with the Ergo Waist Extender.

With so many great Ergo Baby Carrier designs available, I thought it would be a good idea to explain the differences between the Ergo Sport and the Ergo Performance.

Looks

Both the Sport and the Performance are more rugged looking than the standard Ergo Baby sling and will appeal to dads and active parents.

The Sport features a matt black body and straps with feature white stitching and poppers for the sleep hood, giving it an urban styling. New to the Ergo fold is the blue colourway with darker blue stitching and black poppers.

The Performance comes in grey and green colourways and has a more sporty, active look.

Weight

The Ergo Performance Baby Carrier is approximately 1/3 lighter than the original Ergo and the Sport, making it ideal to wear all day.

Material

The Grey Ergo Performance has an outer shell made of 98% polyester and 2% Lycra and the Green Performance has a 70% nylon and 30% cotton outer. Both colourways have a cooling panel and mesh lining to help keep you and your baby dryer and more comfortable.

The Ergo Sport Baby Carrier is made from 35% cotton and 65% polyester.

Sizing

Both the Performance and the Sport have waist straps that extend 25” to 48”, larger than the original Ergo. The waist extension can be used with the Ergo Sport, but not with the Performance.

The Sport has shoulder straps than can extend to 27” whereas the Performance extend to 23”.

Shoulder Straps

The new Ergo Performance has shaped straps, contoured to make then follow the shape of your chest. They are thinner than on other Ergos, and have a non-water-absorbent foam for padding.

Chest Strap

The Performance Ergo Carrier has a sliding chest strap for easy adjusting.

Sleep hood

On the Sport, the sleeping hood can be fully detached (it is fixed on with poppers). The hood on the Performance is attached and can be fully tucked away in the zippered pocket.

Another key influence seems to be the use of a baby carrier or baby sling: the study showed that 51% of mothers who carried their baby, breastfed exclusively.

Becoming parents has certainly slowed down our travelling. It is not just that travelling is a bit of a mission with children. Staying home with the children is never boring. From the children’s point of view, a trip to the local farm is an adventure in itself.

With many of our relatives living far away, hardly two months go by without us jetting off somewhere for the weekend.

Here are a few things we have learned over the last two years of travelling with a baby:

Breastfeed as long as you can: Food for the little one is always ready even when the plane is delayed by a few hours. Breastfeeding babies during take-off and landing also stop their little ears hurting. Don’t worry too much about flying with small children, the white noise of the plan engine often puts them to sleep offering you a peaceful journey.
Use a baby sling. A baby sling is one of the essential items for smooth travelling and once you have arrived to your destination. You don’t have to worry about the buggy not being delivered to the aircraft door when you land. If you are connecting planes, the buggy is often transferred straight to your second flight, living you to carry your child through the long corridors. Buggies are often damaged during transport too while you can keep your baby sling with you. I have found myself a few times walking up and down the aisle with a fractious baby in the baby wrap to put her to sleep. The baby wrap provided her with a familiar feeling which gave her the reassurance she needed to doze off. A Godsend!
Bribes, bribes, bribes: bring plenty of biscuits. Oat biscuits are a good choice as they keep them full for longer and avoids the sugar rush which can make them over-excited. For the same reason, bring some water (within the limits allowed) and avoid sugary drinks. Fruit make easy snacks as well.
Let them run around whenever you can. The children have to sit still for a long time while they are in the plane. While you’re waiting, give them a chance to stretch their legs. Most airports have a play area with crayons or toys.
Keep the bare minimum hand luggage. It is easier to take care of the children if your hands aren’t full with luggage.
Tag your tots. There is no worse feeling than turning around for a split second and not being able to spot your child. It happens so quickly. Plan ahead and get a wristband where you can write your mobile number.
Choosing a seat by the window goes a long way to keep the toddlers entertained: seeing the plane take off and land, seeing how the plane slows down after landing, spot the colours or talk about the clouds…

If you are using a Wilkinet for the first time,the front carry is the easiest carrying position to start with. The baby is securely fasten inside the baby carrier. The baby carrier is then strapped onto your body. It’s easy, it feels safe and it’s the best starting point for you and your baby.

Many parents love carrying their baby facing forward i.e. facing the road. While some babies thrive with the extra stimulation, it is a carrying position best kept for shorter periods of time and not for naps. In a forward facing position, baby can’t see your face, hear your voice or your heartbeat which all provide reassurance.

You can move to back carries when you feel ready. If this is your first baby, you may feel unsure. It’s ok, back carrying is a new sensation. Take your time, learn step by step and soon it will become second nature. Around 18 – 20lb (9-10kg), most parents of average build/weight/height will feel that their baby is too heavy for front carries. This is also the time when the baby learns to cling on to you so back carries become a lot easier.

Facing In: from a tiny 5lb newborn

Facing Out: Babies with chubby legs may out grow the leg space more quickly than slimmer babies. Please remember that your baby has less head protection this way. Do not start using this position until your baby is about 3½ months old (or approx 14lb).

On the Hip: You can use your Wilkinet to carry your baby on your hip once he has sufficient head and neck control. This carrying position is only recommended for going on walks. It is not suitable for shopping trips or when doing household tasks. The reason for this is that more weight is being placed on just one shoulder and you will need one arm around the baby to avoid undue neck or shoulder strain.

On the Back: Back carrying is a lovely carrying position. You still have a strong connection with your baby while having your hands completely free. There is also less strain on parents’ back and neck muscles so recommended for parents with back problems or chunky babies.

The Wilkinet story started in the 1970s with Sally Wilkins. As many mums, Sally couldn’t find a comfortable baby carrier so she set out to adapt the one she had with her first child. As years went by, she refined her design with the help of her eight children.

She also received the help of Deirdre Mackay, the then chairwoman of the NCT Technical Committee. A mum, physiotherapist and antenatal teacher herself, Deirdre helped Sally improve the design of the baby carrier:

A baby carrier should not let the baby dangle by the crouch through leg holes. Mothers around the world know that a wrap or a shawl has to support the baby under its bottom and transfer the weight to the parent’s body. There should be no ‘leg holes’ to suspend the baby.

Today’s tip: buying the right size for your baby wrap

A baby wrap is a long piece of cloth, especially chosen to carry your baby. There are no buckles, no rings. The very simple design gives you flexibility to carry your baby anyway you want. You just wrap the fabric around you and pop the baby in.

Whether you carry your baby on your front, on your back or for breastfeeding, it will be much easier if you choose your baby wrap‘s size carefully. Your baby sling should be just long enough to wrap around you easily without leaving long tails behind you. You could trip over or they could get caught. It should be long enough so you can carry in all the positions you wish to use.

A stretchy baby sling – like the Calin Bleu fleece baby wrap – will usually come in one size. The tails are tapered in order to be very thin at the end. You can easily wrap the fabric one more time around your waist and tie in the front or on the side.

His back should be curved forward, his head able to rest on your chest or on your back if he falls asleep. His legs should be wide apart, slightly flexed and the knees higher than his bottom. Try squatting and resting your bottom on your heels, that’s pretty much the position you’re aiming for your baby.

There are so many baby carriers to choose from, it can feel a bit daunting to know where to start. Add to this the various types of baby slings, the acronyms and we have some very confused parents. Here is a quick glossary to baby slings. We hope this helps

Asian carriers, Asian inspired baby carriers (ABC) – There is a lively tradition of baby carrying in the Far East. Each country will have a different variation: Mei tai (China), Onbuhimo (Japan), Podegi (Korea) for example. Many baby carriers available today are ‘inspired’ from these traditional baby carriers and adapted them to the needs of Western mothers. The Napsack baby is an Asian baby carrier.

Baby backpack – this wide term refers to the baby carriers which are most suited to back carries. It doesn’t mean that they can’t be used for front carries but they are particularly easy to use on your back. The Ergo baby carrier is an example of a baby backpack.

Babywearing – Babywearing is another word for ‘baby carrying’. Imagine baby slings being so comfortable that you could ‘wear’ them for hours, just like a coat and carry your baby in it as much as he needs/wants to.

Back carries – Back carries refer to all the positions where the baby is carried on the parent’s back. Most baby slings are suitable for back carries although some might be more suited than others. Soft carriers, like mei tai, or baby backpacks are easy to use on your back.

Braiding – Baby wraps are much easier to use when the fabric is soft and ‘floppy’. Some wraps are soft straight out the packet, others will need time and use to soften. To speed up the softening, you can sit on the wrap or braid it: knot it over and over until the fabric softens. Also true for some ring slings.

Calin bleu – A brand of baby wraps made in the UK. Calin Bleu specialises in light and soft baby wraps, easy to use and suitable from birth to toddlers.

DYI slings – Making your own baby sling can be fun. Many mums can make their own baby sling. For your safety, make sure you follow the sling sewing instructions carefully. Choose good quality material and rings (Slingrings.com are the best). For a wrap, a simple piece of cloth suffices. For a ring sling, a pouch, a soft structured carrier or a mei tai, you will find dozens of sling sewing instructions online.

Tips about making your baby wrap more comfortable

Baby wraps can have a bit of a learning curve but once you have mastered the art of wrapping your baby, they are incredibly comfortable baby slings. Here are some of our tips to make your baby wrap more comfortable.

Choose your baby wrap carefully. If your baby is a newborn or you’re shopping while you’re pregnant, stretchy wraps are a lovely option. They are easy to use, especially for breastfeeding and feel snug. If you’re baby is more than six months old or for a toddler and you wish to have one wrap to take you until toddlerhood, then a woven wrap would be a better purchase. All baby slings have their advantages and drawbacks. Having the baby wrap that is best suited to how you would like to use it will be much easier.

Read the instructions and the manufacturer’s information carefully. Most manufacturers will recommend one carry as the easiest to start. It might vary depending on the type of baby wrap. For back carries, the secured back carry is much easier for stretchy wraps than other types of back carries. The pocket carry is easier with a stretchy wrap and trickier with a woven wrap.

Wash your baby wrap once or twice. Make sure you double check the manufacturer’s washing instructions. Some wraps can be tumble dried, others are best lined dry. Some will be soft right out of the packet, others will need softening. The best way to soften your baby wrap is to use it. You can also sit on it any time you sit down, in the car, on the sofa, at the computer, at diner… Some babywearers also recommend braiding the wrap, basically knotting it over and over until the fabric softens. A soft baby wrap will be much easier to use.

Think of your baby wrap as three thirds: the top hem, the middle and the bottom hem. When we say ‘tighten the top hem’ it’s not just the top hem but the top third of the wrap. The bottom hem keeps the baby in place and high on your back, support your baby’s thighs wide apart. The middle third forms a pocket for his bottom and his rounded back. The top hem holds the baby snuggly against you. He doesn’t back, which would force you to lean forward to compensate. Neither of you would be comfortable. When all three parts of the baby wrap are adjusted properly, you are able to stand straight with no discomfort to either of you.

Using your child carrier on your back (2)

Earlier, we started giving tips and information on carrying your baby on your back. Here is the second part of this article. We look forward to hearing from you and hope to continue adding your babywearing advice.

The manufacturer of your child carrier often recommends one back carrying position as the easiest to learn. Read that carefully and try that first. For example, tying a knot in the front with a baby wrap makes the rest much easier.

Baby should be sitting deeply in the baby sling. His legs should be spread wide apart, his knees flexed and slightly higher than his bottom. This is called the frog position and will be essential both for your baby’s comfort and yours.

Make sure the fabric of the child carrier is stretched widely across his back and stretching from the thighs to the neck.

The baby sling should feel snug and baby should be carried high. If it is well adjusted, you don’t need to lean forward or backwards to compensate for your baby’s weight. You should be able to carry your baby for a couple of hours without the need to tighten your baby sling along the way.

Once you’re more confident back carrying, you can experiment different positions. It is always surprising to parents and professionals that children seem to have their favourite position. Some children like to have their arms out, other their arms in, some will only tolerate to be carried high on your back in order to see above your shoulders while others won’t mind. Some parents like carrying high on their waist, others lower on their hips…

You could also email us a photo of your baby in the baby sling so we can help you adjust it. It helps if you send a photo of the back, the side and front.

Keep in mind that some baby slings are easier than others to use on for back carries. Baby wraps are a bit more complicated to learn to use but very comfortable once you’re used to it. Most baby slings can be used to carry your baby on your back, at least that’s what it says in the product description. However becoming confident enough to carry your baby on your back when you’re out and about and others are looking can feel a bit daunting. Many parents give up and resort to using a buggy. It doesn’t need to be so, learning to carry your baby on your back takes a bit of practice but once you get used to it, it gives you a great sense of freedom and comfort.

Here are a few pointers to help you get started.

Choose your baby sling carefully. Make sure that it is suitable for your baby’s age. For example, the Ergo baby backpack is suitable from birth for front carriers with the insert and can be used on the back only from 6 months.

Read your baby sling instructions carefully, take the time to watch some videos on the internet.

Take your time. Don’t try to rush and do it as quickly a possible, it would only make you and your baby nervous and flustered.

Learn step by step. First pop your baby on your back without a baby sling, just the motion of placing your baby on your back as -you would play with your baby. Both you and your baby how his weight feels on your back, where he’s positioned, what feels the most natural…

Practice on a soft surface with another adult around. It doesn’t necessarily help if the person tries to hold the child on your back or help you with your baby sling but they can help make sure that your baby is safe.

Choosing a key phrase like ‘lie down’ and repeat it regularly will slowly teach your baby to sit still while you are getting him in the baby slings. You’ll be surprised how quickly this technique can help quieten the ‘wrigglest’ toddlers.

Liz contacted us about her Ergo baby carrier. Her 8-month old arches his back and leans back when he is in the baby carrier. She was concerned about his comfort. She tried loosening the baby backpack to give him more room but it made babywearing uncomfortable for herself.

Here are a few pointers to use your Ergo baby carrier comfortably.

As a general rule, babies need to be well supported in slings, so although the idea of freedom is great, it can lead to problems as the baby can move too much and as you say makes it hard to carry. Baby should be held snug against yourself.

When you are carrying on your back, at 8 months the best position for the arms is under the straps. This will depend upon each baby/parent but we have found that the vast majority of parents carrying on the back at this stage found that this is the best position for the arms.

It is worth checking how tight the shoulder straps are: the toggle that goes underneath your arms, rather than the chest strap. If this strap is too loose, it could lead to the baby not being as supported as they need to be.

When you place the baby in the Ergo baby carrier, make sure that the baby is seated well at the bottom of the carrier. If need be, ask an adult to grab the top edge of the carrier and pull on it as you bounce gently. This will make sure that the child is deeply seated in the carrier and has as much fabric as possible supporting his back.

As with any baby sling, the baby’s legs should be flexed and wide apart, almost resting on your hips.

Many parents find that a few sessions with an osteopath or a cranial osteopath also greatly helped their child settle in the baby carrier.

“It took me a few tries to adjust my Ergo baby carrier. I experimented with tightening each straps, loosening them, moving the chest strap higher or lower, moving the hip belt higher on my waist or lower on my hips. Once I had found what worked for me, it was incredibly comfortable. I could carry my son for hours without any ache. It was worth experimenting what worked for me”, says Ann.

To decide which child carrier will suit your baby most, you need to think about how your will be using it. Answering these simple five questions will help you think about what you expect from your baby sling and how you would like to use it.

How old is your baby? If you’re shopping while you’re pregnant or while your baby is a newborn, make sure that you child carrier is suitable from birth. If your baby is already a year old, check how long you can use it for.
Do you suffer from back pain? If you suffer from back pain, focus on a child carrier that will spread the weight of the baby efficiently across your back, shoulders and hips. To avoid having to lean forward or back, make sure that the baby can be held snugly against you.
Will you be using your child carrier while feeding your baby? Bottle feeding or breastfeeding can be made a lot easier using a baby sling. Some are easier than others, read the product description carefully or ask us for help.
What’s your lifestyle? Do you live in a city or the countryside? Do you take long hikes in the country, or are in and out of the car several times a day. Do you have older children to look after?
Does your baby have any health condition? For example, babies will reflux will need to be held upright in their child carrier for long periods of time.

Most baby slings can be used in all situations but each have their strengths and weaknesses, things they will be more adapted for. Choose your child carrier well and it will be much easier to use.

You have received your babysling and are about to try it for the first time. Take a few minutes to read our top tips for using a babysling for the first time.

Be patient. It takes time to learn a new skill, especially if this new skill involves a new baby who may not cooperate when you need him to. Welcome to the world of parenting! Take your time, it will be worthwhile.

Relax. If you’re tense, your baby will pick up on your nervousness. On the contrary, if you relax, he or she will relax too.

Choose a moment when your baby is content. A babysling does soothe crying babies but it’s best to learn when he is calm, fed, and changed.

Familiarise yourself with the instructions. Your babysling will come with an instruction booklet or a DVD. Choose the carry that seems the easiest, usually the manufacturer will recommend one nd read that one, paying attention to the photos. Don’t try to learn all the carrying positions at once.

Some videos might help. You can easily find babywearing videos on the internet showing you the carrying positions you can use with your babysling. Watching them will no doubt be useful.

Practice with a doll. You practice putting on your babysling with a doll or a soft toy, sometimes even a pillow will do.

Take a look in the mirror and compare with the manufacturer’s photos. Does it look the same? If your baby as high? Is the fabric spread out as on the photos or is it bunched up? Are the straps on your shoulders or riding up on your neck.

Does it feel right? Most parents’ first reaction when they put their baby in a babysling is: Wow I can’t feel her weight. Is it how it feels? Does it feel comfortable and secure?

Walk outside. Taking a brisk walk outside will remind your baby of your walking movement when he was in the womb. Many babies settle more easily that way than bouncing around the room.

Take your time and be gentle with yourself. You didn’t learn to drive in one day. With a little bit of patience, you will soon enjoy carrying your baby comfortably for years on.

Being able to copy mummy and daddy looking after a younger sibling can help a child deal with the emotions attached to the arrival of a new baby in the family. Somewhere in their little mind, it also plants the seed that carrying your babies is the ‘normal’ way of looking after them, and hopefully, when comes the time for them to have their own children, they will remember it and choose to ‘babywear’.

Before I say anything else, I have to confess that I’m a big fan of baby wraps, especially for young babies. I owned other types of baby slings but never really got around to using them. After my second child was born, a lovely mum kindly gave me a Napsack baby carrier. My immediate reaction was WOW, WOW, WOW!

With so many options out there, it can be difficult to choose an infant carrier. You will find lots of articles to help you in this blog.

Comfort. Does it feel good to you?
Fit for your baby. Does it seem to suit your baby well?
Fit for you. Does it fit your size and body type? Can you carry the baby without strain?
Safety. Will the baby be secure and well supported?
Features. Does it meet your needs?
Usability. Can you easily get your baby in and out of the infant carrier? How about putting it on and off? Keep in mind that some models require practice.
Construction. Does the fabric suit your wardrobe, climate and needs? (i.e. lightweight for summer, weatherproof for outdoor use)?
Care. Is it machine-washable or easy to wipe clean?
Flexibility. Can you carry your baby in various positions?
Adjustability. Can the infant carrier be tightened or adjusted to fit you when you are at home in indoor clothing or outside wearing a coat? Can you adjust it easily for use by others?

Autumn is just around the corner and you might wonder how you will protect your baby from the weather when you carry him. Keeping baby warm and dry in winter will be a concern. While they are little, it is easy to zip your coat over them or use a showerproof baby sling.

Once your baby grows, the Ergo baby carrier raincover proves extremely useful. Its clever design allows it to fit over most baby slings. If you are using the cover with an Ergo baby carrier, you can snap the top straps over your carrier’s straps. If you are using it over a different carrier, you can use the two little hooks to attach the straps together behind your neck.

Stretch the raincover over your baby’s back and under her legs so that they are nicely tucked in. Clip the strap behind your back for extra sideways protection.

Tips to use a baby sling for the first time

Like many things about parenting,using a baby sling for the first time can be a bit intimidating. Follow these simple recommendations and soon you will be on your ‘babywearing‘ way!

It sounds of obvious but this is the place to start: read the instruction manual or watch the DVD carefully. If you don’t have one, contact the manufacturer or research on line for babywearing videos for your type of baby sling. The baby carrier manufacturer will usually recommend one carry to start with, just stick to that until you’re comfortable with it.

The easiest is to practice with a doll or a teddy bear. Even a cushion would work, or your bump if you’re pregnant.

Start when your baby is relaxed, fed, burped and changed. Don’t wait until your baby is cranky and tired to remember your brand new sling.

Ask a supportive friend to give you a hand, read the instructions for you or just hold the baby while you’re putting on your baby sling.

It can help to practice in front of a mirror, take a look at the photos in the instructions and see how it looks on you. You can also take a photo (front, back and side) of yourself and compare them with the manufacturer’s photos.

For all types of baby slings, there are a few principles to remember:

Baby should be held high in the baby carrier. You only need to tilt your head forward to kiss her forehead. Your baby’s bottom should never be below your navel.
Baby should be sitting in the baby sling, not with her legs dangling down. Her thighs should be wide apart in a frog-like position, her knees flexed and higher than her bottom.
The fabric of the baby sling or the straps of the baby carrier should be spread wide and not twisted. The baby sling should feel snug in order to keep the centre of gravity inside your body. There should be no need to lean forward, back or sideways.

Once your baby carrier is properly worn, you can carry your child for hours without the baby carrier feeling loose or stretched out.
