Nappy Wraps – Air Flow from Motherease now in stock

Waterproof nappy covers are an essential component of a 2-part nappy system. Personally, I have always preferred hook and loop or Velcro fastening nappy wraps but we have had lots of customers request popper fastenings.

As a result, we have taken delivery of a big box full of Mother-ease Airflow nappy wraps, in all sizes, in white and the lovely eco-theme patterns.

Air flow wraps are part of the multi-award winning range of real nappies from Motherease and they will work with Mother Ease onesize nappies, Sandys etc as well as with pre fold nappies and terry squares.

The nappy covers are made from polyester with a thin waterproof layer bonded to the back, making them easy to care for and non-crackly.

Many parents find that the popper fastening gives them a better fit and that older babies and toddlers are unable to undo the poppers, making nappy removing incidents less likely.

Did anyone else spot the lovely picture of beautiful crawling babies all sporting yummy washable nappies on the cover of the Observer Magazine this weekend? It was actually to feature a story about sperm donation but it was still wonderful to see such a high profile cover with cloth nappies.

BPA to be Banned from Baby Bottles?

A group of scientists has written to the European Food Safety Authority asking for the use of BPA to be limited.

Many scientists believe that exposure to BPA (a chemical used in many plastics) could cause developmental problems in developing babies yet some well known UK retailers were selling potentially dangerous baby bottles as recently as April this year.

At The Natural Nursery, all our baby bottles are BPA free, including the glass baby bottle and the breastmilk bottle.

We believe that it is important to give your baby the best start in life so on the times when you want to give expressed breastmilk, make sure you choose a BPA free baby bottle.

Some of our lovely customer and others have been giving us feedback on our products and we thought we would share this review of the Itti Bitti reusable nappy with you:

I love my itti bitti nappies! The first thing I love about them is the velour outer and the pretty colours. They don’t look like nappies, more like plush pants and they are sooo soft and pattable. Really pretty on their own with a pair of babylegs! They are low rise and won’t stop your baby from bending, and they are so trim that they fit under clothes cut for disposables.

I use the SIOs and find the snap in inserts very useful because you can replace the insert when it’s only wet, which makes for an economical option, as well as less bulk in the changing bag.

Finally they are very absorbent and cope well with explosive breastfed poo!

A customer emailed us asking for ideas to give parents who just had twins. Shopping new baby gifts is always fun, shopping for twins is doubly fun! Here are some ideas of what I would get. What about you? If you had twins, what would you have loved to received (apart from the ability to clone yourself)

For bath time, baby towel ponchos would be good to keep one baby warm while mummy gets the second one out of the bath. We have a few more Green baby towel ponchos on sale for little girls.

Baby shoes are also lovely new baby gifts.

You might also want to give one present for both twins. Earth Friendly baby make a lovely gift pack of organic baby bath products. We also love the Natalia baby gift box. It’s full of natural products for total bliss to enjoy the new babies and to bring the benefits of nurture, nourishing skin care, relaxation and positive touch into the family life.

Have you noticed how once the presents are opened, children often play more with the box than the actual toy? If your children are anything like ours, give them a cardboard box, some crayons and they’ll entertain themselves for hours, day after day. The box starts as a boat, then becomes a bed for a tired teddy before inevitably turning into a hat!

One day we received a wardrobe, not very exciting for children if it weren’t for the very large boxes they come into! Shortly afterwards, armed with box cutters and brown tape, we started cutting, building, sticking… Our playhouse was born. It was very brown and boring but big and exciting! Over the next few months we decorated it with drawings, paper cuttings, paint, ribbons. It felt too dark inside into so we cut out some windows and added curtains. From brown box to work of art in the eyes of children. Our daughter would often retreat in it, maybe the space was more at her scale.

It was all and well until we needed the space in her bedroom. Being all taped up, it was impossible to fold it, or to recycle for that matter. We discarded more than 2 years ago but she still regularly asks me to build another one. This is her on the little video, she didn’t notice I was filming her.

That’s where I wish I had known about the Paperpod rocket playhouse and playfort. Inspired by children’s play, they are nothing short of fabulous! Unlike my home made version, they are easy to assemble. Ours was hard work to put together! It can be dismantled, and are made in the UK from recycled material. Children will not only enjoy playing with them but decorating them, customizing them to make them truly unique.

They are sturdy enough to withstand hours and months of play and be passed down to siblings, or little friends when your children are done with them. They can eventually be recycled too.

They’re the perfect Christmas presents for toddlers and young children.

Ethical gifts for Christmas

It is easy to fill the children’s Advent calendars and the Christmas stockings full junk, plastic toys which will discarded tomorrow, with of chocolate and sweets. I love looking for special ideas, little toys that will challenge their creativity and their skills. Toys that will give them hours of play for several months.

First on my list are definitely the Hama Beads, especially now that they are on special! The Hama beads stimulate children creativity with the various designs and colourful patterns. Hama beads also helps them develop finger dexterity, preparing them for writing. Children place the little beads on the peg board, then an adult irons them out, securing them in a lovely pattern.

The Lifecycle Layer Puzzle is an other adorable toy that your child will enjoy for hours. Each educational puzzle is built up in layers showing the different stages in the development of the creature, from egg through to adult. It challenges the child’s manipulation and problem solving skills.

The box of magnetic letters can be given as a whole or place a couple of letters in each day of the Advent calendar. The colourful letters are easy for toddlers to manipulate and an introduction to reading through play. They are made from sustainable wood to strict fair labour standards.

We have just taken delivery of our first parcel of the new organic range from Taggies, and my are they lovely!

Made with the same care and attention to detail as the classic Taggies, these organic ones are so soft and yummy.

The organic Taggine Blankies are 30cm square and come in a range of 4 patterns, all in soft earth-tones and all featuring 20 tags around the side, made from organic cotton and pure silk.

Ergo Sport Baby Carrier

We get lots of calls asking what is so different about the Ergo Sport so I thought it would be a good idea to put some of the differences down on paper:

General Features and Benefits

The Ergo Sport is designed for fathers and male carriers – it still has all the features and functions of the Ergo New Generation II but is cut slightly larger to accommodate a male frame and looks more rugged.

Fabric

The Sport is made from a 35% cotton/65% polyester blend designed to have a slight wicking to help keep babywearers more comfortable. This fabric is lighter and more breathable. The fabric also feels soft to the touch.

The New Gen II is made from 100% cotton with 100% cotton poplin lining (both SKAL certified organic in the case of the organic Ergos).

Sizing

The Sport’s waist strap can be extended an extra 5”, so fits from 30 inches to a maximum of 48 inches.

The Sport’s shoulder straps extend an extra 4”, so it will fit 5′ to 6.5′ body height.

The New Gen II has a waist belt circumference of 25″ to 43″ and the shoulder straps will adjust to fit from 5′ to 6′5″ body height but we would suggest that those over 6’ would be more comfortable with the Sport.

Design

The Sport has a vent to provide added breathability to keep both baby and parent cooler and more comfortable.

The Sport is available in black with feature white stitching making an urban, rugged looking sling.

Sleeping Hood

The Sport’s hood can be completely removed and stored in the built-in pocket.

The New Gen II sleep hood is fixed to the babycarrier and can be tucked into the pocket when not in use.

Carry positions

Both baby carriers can be used in the front, back and hip positions, for babies from birth up to 18kgs. Both carriers support the spread squat position being the correct sitting position for the baby’s hip, pelvis and spine growth and does not allow the baby to hang from the crotch.

Both slings distributes weight to the carrier’s hips and shoulders giving a more comfort carrying experience.

Back Pocket

On the Sport, the zippered pocket has been removed and instead there is a poppered pocket to store the sleep hood when it is not in use.

The New Gen II has a side zippered pocket to store small items in and an open top pocket to keep the sleeping hood tidy when not is use.

Can they be used by male and female carriers?

Absolutely, both carriers are designed to be used by both sexes.

Personal thoughts

I haven’t actually used the Ergo Sport as I am barely 5’ 2” and my daughter is sadly too big to be carrier now but I did use the New Gen 4 or 5 times a week until she was 4 1/2 years old. I can say that the new fabric on for the Sport is lovely and soft, it looks really hard wearing and my husband would have jumped at the chance to have one.

For the last two seasons we have been having a little help with our organic allotment in the shape of an instant organic garden from Rocket Gardens.

A Rocket Garden is a box jam-packed with organic baby plants packed in golden straw ready to be planted out in your garden, terrace or window sill.

Each garden full of plants chosen with care – from the organic children’s garden specially selected to appeal to children to the patio garden of plants suitable for families that don’t have space for a vegetable patch.

The plants are grown in unheated greenhouses in Cornwall and are certified by Soil Association, meaning you get healthy, hardy plants and yummy vegetables to eat straight from the garden.

These instant gardens are fantastic to grow with children – they can see the results straight away and get to eat fresh food straight off the plant.

We have had great success with these gardens – we have been regularly cropping all through the winter, have been able to give huge baskets of fresh produce away to friends and the chickens have been eating greens to their hearts content.

Packaging

Here at The Natural Nursery we try lots of little ways to be eco-friendly – they all add up in the end.

One of these ways is to keep a very close eye on our packaging and the way we send parcels out to our customers.

We appreciate that you want your goods to arrive in a beautiful condition (we want that too) but on the other hand, you don’t want vast quantities of packaging to clog up your bin and then your local land fill site.

That is why we reuse as much packaging as we can – lots of our parcels go out in reused boxes and we reuse any packing materials our delieveries come in.

When we have to buy new packing materials, we try to make them as environmentally friendly as possible. We use bio-degradable bubble wrap and recycled cardboard to parcel up delicate items, our mailing sacks are made out of recycled or biodegradable plastics and the paper we print our delivery notes on is made from trees from sustainable forests and is 100% biodegradable – even the glue that sticks the label on the front of the parcel!

So does this all cost The Natural Nursery more? Well, yes it does. We charge what we think are fair postage and packing costs and absorb the extra ourselves.

We want you to get your goodies in perfect condition but we don’t want that to have a negative impact on the enviroment, so we are happy to pay a little bit extra to make this happen.

Organic Baby Sleepgowns

Sleepgowns are one of my absolute essentials for new born babies. Not only do they look so sweet, they are so very practical too.

The sleepgown is like a nightie really, suitable for boys and girls, and will have a wide neck opening so it is easy to slip on over the baby’s head, long sleeves and a very long body with elastic at the bottom, a bit like a bag.

This means there are no fiddly poppers to mess around with in the middle of the night when you are changing nappies and the baby can wriggle and kick their little feet all they like – many babies like the feel of being able to rub their feet and legs together without clothes getting in the way.

Most babygowns have integral mitts, ideal for keeping little fingers warm during the winter and stop stop scratching.

You will find that you use them all the time – and they last for ages too. When our daughter out grew the largest size because of the length of her legs, we snipped the elastic in the bottom (you can do this without spoiling the sleepgown) and hey presto! a nightie that lasted another 6 months.
