Types of Nappies

There are three different types of washable nappies currently available on the market:

• Prefold nappies – these are flat squares of cloth which are folded and placed into a waterproof cover
• Shaped nappies – these have a neat, precise fit with either poppers or velcro. They come in various sizes or a one size fits all from birth to potty, where the size is adjusted with poppers at the front or back of the nappy. They are then placed in a waterproof outer cover which comes in various different sizes.
• All-in-one nappies – These are available in various sizes and have a built in waterproof outer cover.

How to order a trial pack

We currently have five birth to six month trial packs and two six month to potty trial packs available so there may be a slight delay of approximately a month or two before we are able to issue the nappies. Please note all the nappies are laundered to NHS standards.

Disposable nappies now account for four per cent of all household waste with the average baby going through 5,000 nappies from birth to potty training. Disposing of all these nappies costs the taxpayer around £40 million a year.

Approximately 8 million disposable nappies are used in the UK every day, with around 7.5 million ending up in landfill sites. Once there, they then take up to 500 years to decompose.

Cloth Nappies, also known as real nappies, cotton nappies, reusable nappies and washable nappies are a natural and gentle alternative to disposables. They are made from soft, breathable cotton and, when used with a liner and a waterproof cover, they are reliable and comfortable.

Although there have been no scientific trials to date, both parents and health professionals have recognised that a child in cloth nappies will become potty trained quicker than those in disposables. Because the child is able to feel some wetness this awareness acts as stimulant to encourage your child to use a potty.

Although all nappies have some environmental impact, you can help to reduce nappy waste going to landfill by using cloth nappies. Cloth nappies also work out cheaper than disposables, saving you up to £500 until your child is potty trained.

Introducing Reusable Nappies

The benefits to the environment of using real nappies are obvious – with disposable nappies making up 2.6 of average household waste which equates to the weight of 70,000 double Decker buses that if placed end to end would reach from London to Edinburgh. (Stats from Waste Watch).

There are additional benefits for your child too. As baby is aware of wetting, potty training can be introduced earlier into their development, as well as better breath ability for babies skin. Using a nappy laundry means that you have no washing or soaking to do, and the prefold nappies that we use are effective and easy to use, with no pins and no origami needed!

I did mostly but did mix and match with some of the Flip Disposable inserts, so I didn’t need to put the tumble dryer on with all that rain we had.

I don’t feel too bad about this as we hadn’t used any disposable nappies since we had the water switched back on after the kitchen was re-done.

I still have some left in the pack of 18 Flip inserts that I opened before Christmas. so it goes to show that you can fit reusable nappies in around having a good time during the holidays.

We asked you where the worst place you had to change a nappy was and the answers were so good they have been compiled into a list:

• Baby Changing rooms where the table was filthy, flooded or there was soggy tissue all over the floor.
• In the boot of the car on our first trip out!
• In a field on a farm
• In a filthy attic of a pub with no other place to use.
• On the floor of a Doctors surgery where there are no nappy changing facilities!
• In a hospital scan department. It was shocking. Small cramped, filthy and absolutly stunk!
• In the woods! Trying to change her whilst leaves were blowing about and sticking to the poo, sticking to her bum, getting in the clean nappy…argh!
• In the middle of Peppa Pig World on the grass as the parent/baby toilet was always occupied. It was rather chilly as well so my poor daughter was not very impressed and neither was her mummy lol.
• Atop a Tor on Dartmoor on a very windy day after a picnic.
  Trying to keep a hand on wipes, nappy and poop in a moorland wind was NOT easy!
• On my lap in a bathroom on a train. Very, very difficult!
• In the Bank Manager’s board Room (Barclays Bank, Cheetham Hill) when my husband and I were asking for a loan to start our business. My daughter had managed to create a REALLY DIRTY nappy and it absolutely stunk and they did not even have a customer toilet – we did not get it after that!!!
• At the  side of motorway on back seat when the wind caught the door and decided to take nearly take it of the hinges. Had to tie the door onto the passenger seat to keep the door shut was not a good time
• In a very small cubical toilet on a british rail train, took my sons nappy off and it weed in my face…awful
• In the middle of a field when out on a picnic – just as a school field trip was walking past!
• At a fairground behind the dodgems, raining torrents, mud up to our knees trying to change a baby in his pushchair – oh my god how worse could it be!!
• Shockingly on the toilet floor in a hospital.
• On a tube in the rush hour
• On a bus

And then there are stories of when the baby joins in and ‘helps’

• We were at the mall, and my daughter had a big mushy poop. It came out the side of her nappy. When I took off her pants, it smeared all over her legs and on the change pad. As I was trying to clean it up, she started playing with it. So, it got all over Everything. Another mom came in and said “Looks like someone has had an explosion

And great places but embarrassing situations:

• I took my baby daughter out with me to meet up with my friend for lunch. We ended up in a really fancy place and she decided to do a huge poop. And the only changing facilities were in the ladies toilets. So as I was her daddy I couldnt go in. The staff pulled a huge expensive marble table out and put their best table cloths on it for me to change her. Was so embarrassed!!

And truly embarrassing and difficult situations:

• The worst place Ive had to change a nappy was at a garden centre near my parents. It has a really posh shop section full of glass vases and whatnot. My LO had a truly obnoxious nappy explosion all over himself AND the buggy. They didnt have any changing facilities so I had to give the poopy baby to my mum while I cleaned the buggy so I could change him on the buggy cos I cant sit on the floor due to disability. So there I am, swiping at poop on the buggy while lovely older ladies walk passed with disapproving faces.

  To top it all off, when I had finally changed LO and got him back in the buggy and started to move away, I saw that some poop had made it onto the expensive looking white shelving nearby. Needless to say, I wiped it off and legged it.

The Flip Nappies from bumGenius are good for hard water areas, and they dry relatively quickly too. They are one size nappies, easy to use, you need a cover and an insert that can be disposable or washable, if you want to learn more please visit our Quick Guide to Flip Nappy System

One of the other reusable nappies we recommend at the Natural Nursery for hard water areas is the bumGenius. This is a birth to potty pocket nappy and it is also a relatively quick dryer.

1) Use a fleece liner to reduce the amount of hard nappy touching your babies skin.

Fleece liners are cheap, colourful and they can be washed and re-used hundreds of times. They are soft against your baby’s skin and help to wick the wet away from the bottom, meaning a more comfortable baby.

2) Scrunch the nappy up and rub it hard between your hands after it has dried.

The idea here is to physically fluff up the fibres of the nappy. It is mostly the movement in a tumble dryer that helps to keep a nappy soft so anything you can do to replicate that helps.

3) Hang the nappy out on the line if possible

Grab every opportunity to give your cloth nappies a bit of line drying time as they will be softer than if they are dried on a radiator. If you really have to radiator dry try to keep the nappies away from the radiator a little – either by using an airer that hooks over the radiator or by drying on chair backs next to the radiator.

4) Tumble dry nappies now and again if possible.

A once a month tumble dry will give your nappies a boost, I used to take mine to my mum’s for a nappy spa day, or I’d use a launderette once in a while.

5) Reduce the amount of washing powder you use.

Washing powders can build up on fabric, stiffening it and making it less asorbent.  Once in a while try just running the nappies through on a hot wash with no powder to strip them of anything that might be making them hard.

6) Put a small cupful of white distilled vinegar into the wash.

White vinegar is great for neutralising smells and for softening hard water. You just put it in the conditioner drawer.  I have used ordinary vinegar in desperation and it works just as well, just smells more vinegary than the distilled stuff.

7) Do an extra fast spin at the end of the wash.

The logic here is to remove as much water from the nappies as possible so they need less time to dry.

Add bicarbonate of soda to the washing powder.

This helps to soften the water, you can use it with white distilled vinegar as well to remove stains.  Half a tablespoon  of bicarbonate of soda is more than enough.

What’s in a kit?

There are 24 trial kits available in Surrey and each one holds everything you need to road test Real Nappies on your baby.  There are a range of Real Nappy types including flat nappies, shaped nappies, pocket and all-in-one nappies.  We also include waterproof wraps, flushable and washable liners, washable wipes, nappy soak, wet bags, a laundry mesh and a nappy bucket.  Go Real are unable to guarantee a specific brand of nappy but all of the main types will be covered and so you will be able to make an informed choice based on the trial.

How will I know how everything works?

Each kit is managed by a trial kit host who will explain to you everything that is in the kit and how to use it.  There will also be a DVD, information leaflet and guide in each kit so if you can’t remember anything when you get home you will have some tools to help you.  You can also give the Go Real team a call at any time during your trial for advice on 0800 328 8175¹, it is free to call them and they can make sure that you talk to someone who has used Real Nappies themselves.  Alternatively you can email them your query to: advice@goreal.org.uk.

How do I get a Kit?

All you need to do is ring Go Real free of charge on 0800 328 8175¹ or email us at advice@goreal.org.uk.  We will then put you in touch with your nearest trial kit host.  Alternatively you can find the one closest to you using the map below and give them a call directly.  You will need to arrange to pick up the trial kit from the host and when you meet up they will arrange a time for you to bring back the kit.  Once your trial is completed Go Real will contact you to get some feedback on how you found the service and to find out whether you intend to use Real Nappies.

Reusable nappies have changed since the traditional terry nappies. There is a wide choice of designs, styles and colours. Many even look like disposable nappies. If you are still not sure, why not come along and have a coffee at one of the monthly nappucinos?

An important incentive

A £30 financial incentive, payable in three instalments, is being offered to parents who join the scheme. You can claim this when nappies are bought from a shop or the internet if a proof of purchase and validation form signed by a healthcare professional is sent to the Waste Minimisation Team at Medway Council. For a validation form, ask your midwife or health visitor.

If you purchase your nappies before your child has been born a copy of the birth certificate will need to be sent to the nappy agent after the birth. If the nappies have been bought from an online site or from a high street retailer then an incentive will be paid in the form of Boots vouchers issued by Medway Council.

If you have been using reusable nappies on a previous child, you can only claim for that child for the period of time they have been using reusable nappies within the current financial year.

If you have been given nappies from a friend to use on your child, you will be entitled to the incentive as there is still a reduction in nappy waste. You will need a validation form signed by your healthcare professional to validate the claim.

Claims are settled within 14 days of receiving all correct paperwork.

Nappy library

This lets parents try some of the vast range of modern cloth nappies available before making a big financial commitment. All parents in Medway can hire one of the comprehensive nappy library kits for a fortnight and find out which nappies work best for them.

Cost

When purchasing nappies you need to consider how quickly you can wash and dry them. It is recommended to have three days worth of nappies. Most babies require approximately six changes a day.

The approximate cost of purchasing and home laundering real nappies for two and a half years ranges from £185 to about £352 depending on nappy type.

Monthly nappucinos

Come along to a relaxed drop-in atmosphere, have a coffee, meet other parents and carers using cloth nappies. Find out more about the benefits of using cloth, see the choices available and have a chat with like-minded people.

Nappucinos are run on the first Monday of every month (excluding bank holidays) from 9.30 to 11.30am, at Lordswood Children’s Centre, Lordswood School, Lordswood Lane.

Saturday club

If you cannot make the Monday events, the Medway Cloth Nappy Network (MCNN) and the Medway Branch of the National Childbirth Trust runs monthly Saturday drop-in groups at Moat House, Crow Lane, Rochester on the third Saturday of the month from 2.30-4pm

An enormous thanks to Olga for letting us re-post her incredible research about the cost of real versus disposable nappies. Olga has set up Green Fluffy Bottoms which is a Facebook group dedicated to real nappy advice and chat. It was established in July 2011 and has been very active ever since.  They  are a mixture of experienced real nappy users and complete beginners, always happy to answer any cloth related questions.

An average child potty trains about 2.5 years old = 912 days in nappies

7 nappy changes a day x 912 days = 6384 disposable nappies

(I personally find this shocking! just imagine pile of them on a landfill)

Wool is naturally watertight and the soft knit construction allows plenty of air to circulate and they are ideal for babies with sensitive skin. The soft ribbing around the legs and waist hold the pants firmly in place without the need for elastic. Very comfortable and very economical.

You will need to lanolise these pants before using but the oil in the wool will keep them watertight and help them “clean themselves” – just air them in between uses.

When they need washing, use a wool shampoo and lanolin conditioner to maintain the oil content and keep them waterproof.

You can choose whether to use a stay-dry insert, an organic cotton insert or a disposable insert.

If you have organic cotton inserts, wash them several times to ensure they are fully absorbent.

To use the Flip Nappy System

FLIP the used insert into your nappy bucket
REPLACE the insert with a clean one
REUSE the cover

First – adjust the nappy cover to the size required:

Organic cotton insert: can be folded one way for a newborn and the other way to make a longer pad for older baby.

Stay-dry insert: follow the embroidered folding lines on the insert:

Fit the insert under the flaps at the back and front of the cover.  The flaps will hold the insert securely in place.

If you are using organic cotton inserts, you may like to use a paper liner, most parents don’t need to with the stay-dry inserts.

Put the nappy on your baby just as you would a disposable nappy, checking the legs openings and waist to ensure a good fit.

When you are ready to change your baby, toss the used insert into your nappy bucket (you can flick any solids straight down the loo).

Wipe out the nappy cover and pop in a new insert before replacing on your baby.

You can reuse the nappy cover up to 5 times before washing.

Green Baby Nappy Balm is a soothing, rich blend of sweet almond oil, cocoa butter, organic olive oil and beeswax – you can use as a daily barrier cream and it can be applied after each nappy change to moisturise and protect and prevent the causes of nappy rash. It will also promote healing where nappy rash has occured.

Most babies will suffer from nappy rash as some point but simple techniques to help you keep it to a minimum include:

1. Regular cleaning of the nappy area
2. Use of nappy/barrier creams
3. Plenty of nappy free time

Nappy rash is NOT caused by using washable nappies.

1. Clean the nappy area

Regular, proper cleaning of the nappy area is essential.

Newborns will need changing up to 7 or 8 times during the day, reducing to every 4 hours once they are a little older.

The nappy area must be thoroughly cleaned and dried at every nappy change.  Some parents like to use warm water and cotton wool or a reusable cotton wipe, especially for newborns.

Other parents will use a disposable baby wipe, some of which can be flushed away.  Disposable baby wipes have the advantage of already containing cleansing agents but parents do need to read the ingredients carefully as some non-organic wipes may contain chemicals that can irritate delicate skin.

An alternative is to use a cleansing cream or baby oil – apply with cotton wool and gently wipe off, making sure all traces of the cream are removed.

Before putting a clean nappy on the baby, ensure that the skin is completely dry.

2. Use a nappy cream

Some parents like to use a nappy change cream or barrier cream, either at every nappy change time or once or twice a day.

Ensure that you choose a natural or organic nappy cream, one that will sooth your baby’s skin without preventing it from breathing.

Always apply creams sparingly and allow to sink in and dry before replacing the nappy.

3. Nappy free time

Babies love to kick around without their nappies on and this is a great way of keeping the nappy area fresh and healthy.

Place the baby on a waterproof changing mat on the floor or the middle of the bed and allow them to kick away.  You may like to tickle them, use it as opportunity for a gentle massage or place a baby gym over the baby.

Putting a cloth nappy (a terry square is ideal) under your baby will help you deal with any little accidents.

Safety

Do remember never to leave you baby unattended on a bed or other high place in case they roll and fall off.

If you are worried about your baby’s health, then do seek medical advice – long running nappy rash could be a symptom of an underlying health issue.

“Last May, ahead of my maternity leave, I wrote about how I’m a bit of a cheapskate, and that I was going to resist all the attempts to part new mums from their cash. One reader remarked that asking an expectant mother for tips on having a cheap baby was similar to asking someone who didn’t yet have a garden to give gardening tips. Few believed my prediction that with careful budgeting I would spend no more than £300 or so. I now realise that perhaps that was naive.

My main nappies have been reusable. Having intended to use a £50 voucher from Haringey council to try a laundry service, I then decided it would be better invested in nappies I could keep. I didn’t start until Wyn was three months old and was conscious that most nurseries won’t use them, so I didn’t want to invest too heavily. Through eBay, scouting out special offers, and nappy swaps I managed to get hold of 16 nappies and all the accessories needed for £105. I’m unsure if this is going to save me money, but I feel better when I look in the bin.

Real easy to use

There’s not a safety pin in sight with real nappies, so they’re simple to use. They come in lots of modern and funky styles that fasten easily with poppers, Velcro or nifty little plastic grips so that the nappy fits your baby snugly. A biodegradable liner, that keeps baby dry, goes inside the nappy and can be easily flushed away. To prevent leaks – most real nappies are covered with a breathable waterproof cover available in colourful designs.

Real savings

The total cost of using real nappies can be half that of using disposables. Further savings can be achieved by using the same real nappies for your second or third child.

Home washing offers the greatest savings, costs can be as low as £1 a week including the price of detergents and energy. There is no need to soak or pre-wash the nappies, just wash at 60 degrees C. For extra convenience, local nappy laundries offer weekly services that collect used nappies and provide a fresh supply, laundered to the highest standards, for the next seven days all for a cost similar to that of buying disposables.

Sure Start Maternity Grants

A Grant of £500 per each baby is available through the Sure Start Maternity Grant Scheme. Perhaps some of this money could be used to get started with Real Nappies. A Sure Start Maternity Grant is intended to help you pay for the immediate needs of a new-born baby if your income is low. It is paid from the Social Fund as a lump sum, and you do not have to pay it back. It is not limited by a budget and everyone who is entitled will get a payment or grant.

Who can get Sure Start Maternity Grants?

You are eligible for a Sure Start Maternity Grant if you or your partner are getting Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Pension Credit, Working Tax Credit where a disability or severe disability element is included in the award or Child Tax Credit at a rate higher than the family element. “I’m not sure what to do with regards to nappies and our first child is expected soon! I’d always thought that I’d plump for reusable nappies, however, we have recently moved to Kuwait with my husband’s work and he says that due to the way that water is desalinated here, and consumes so much water, it would be more environmentally friendly to use disposables. The eco-friendly disposables on the market are not sold here and even if I stocked up I would largely be reliant on the less ethical brands. I really am in a quandary, please help!”

It seems to have been a while now since I last heard anyone raising this age-old debate. Six years ago, it was all the rage, most likely because the Environment Agency published its controversial report which calculated and compared the environmental footprint of both washable and disposable nappies.

My reaction to the report can be seen here in an article I wrote for this paper’s G2 features section. Why, I asked, had the report not examined the amount of waste sent to landfill that disposable nappies generate? And why, when trying to calculate the embodied energy of washable nappies, did it assume people ironed them?!

In 2008, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs published an updated report (pdf) which drew much more nuanced conclusions. It concluded: “The environmental impacts of using shaped reusable nappies can be higher or lower than using disposables, depending on how they are laundered. The report shows that, in contrast to the use of disposable nappies, it is consumers’ behaviour after purchase that determines most of the impacts from reusable nappies.”

It then listed six ways for users of washable nappies to “reduce their environmental impacts”: line drying outside whenever possible; tumble drying as little as possible; when replacing appliances, choosing more energy efficient appliances (A+ rated machines); not washing above 60°C; washing fuller loads; and reusing nappies on other children.

There was a time when the (previous) government was actively promoting the use of washable nappies with subsidised schemes such as WRAP’s Real Nappy Campaign. In 2007, the then environment minister said this “three-year campaign had succeeded in diverting approximately 23,000 tonnes of biodegradable nappy waste from landfill in England”.

But, beyond answering the opening query about the comparative environmental merits of washable and disposable nappies, I would also be interested to hear if any local schemes are still up and running promoting the use of washable, or laundry-serviced nappies.”

UK parents throw away around 3 billion disposable nappies every year – that is a lot of landfill!

Each one of these nappies will require around one cup of crude oil to make the plastic in the waterproof wrap – all to be thrown away, a massive waste of our natural resources.

A Women’s Environmental Network commissioned study shows that disposable nappies use:

• 3.5 times as much energy
• 8 times as much non-renewable raw materials
• 90 times as much renewable raw materials
• 2.3 times as much waste water
• 60 times as much solid waste
• up to 30 times as much land

as reusable nappies.

It is believed that it will take up to 500 years for these nappies to decompose (all the while producing dangerous methane gas), which could be a big headache for our grandchildren.

So all in all, washable nappies are the best.

What sort of nappy do you use?

Every year approximately 1400 tonnes of nappy waste are sent to landfill from Tamworth. Nappies make up 4% of the total household waste. It is estimated they will take between 200 and 500 years to decompose. A baby will have approximately 2,000 nappy changes a year which could cost you £800 per child. It takes large amounts of resources including trees, oil and chemicals to produce disposable nappies for the British market.

There is an alternative… Reusable cloth nappies. They are simple and easy to use, washable at 60 degrees and can be tumble dried. They can not only save you money but can also help to protect the environment. They are also on average less expensive than disposables and can be used for more than one child. A cloth nappy system including home laundry can cost from as little as £200. Staffordshire County Council are working with in partnership with local cloth nappy providers to encourage people to use reusable nappies. A financial reward of up to £30 per child is available for using cloth nappies.

In Wolverhampton there are in the region of 3,500 babies born per year therefore almost £1.5m is wasted on disposable nappies.

Incentive scheme

Wolverhampton City Council run a scheme to encourage you to use re-usable nappies:

• £30 cash back on production of an original receipt, to prove that you have purchased real nappies. (Minimum purchase of £30 required per child).

Real nappy facts

Reduced waste

Parents using real nappies are able to reduce their waste.  This is according to an Environment Agency report that looked at the environmental impacts of both real nappies and disposables.

Global warming impact

If you follow the Real Nappy Campaigns top ten tips your global warming impact would be less than when using disposable nappies.

Energy use

Parents are recommended to wash soiled nappies in full loads at 60C using low energy rated washing machines, allowing them to dry naturally wherever possible. Washable nappies do not need to be soaked prior to washing and do not need ironing.

Cost

Home laundered nappies could save parents up to £500 on the cost of keeping a baby in nappies.

Waste

Nearly three billion disposable nappies are thrown away in the UK every year creating over 690,000 tons of nappy waste.

There is an alternative available real nappies are reusable, washable nappies and a practical alternative to disposables. They are easy and cheap to use and help reduce rubbish going into landfill.

Leeds City Council has run a real nappy incentive scheme for a number of years to encourage and support families in Leeds who want to save some money and the environment.  Since the scheme started the families have saved nearly 700 tonnes of landfill waste.

What is the real nappy incentive scheme?

Parents can either get a free trial pack or £30 cash back when they spend £50 on real nappies.

Trial packs
These are a good way to try the system, especially if it’s your first baby or if you don’t know much about the real nappy system.

The trial pack includes:

• 1 Bum Genius v3 nappy
• 1 Pop-in nappy
• 10 x disposable paper liners
• Instructions and a list of suppliers

These are shaped nappies which can be adjusted to fit as your baby grows.

Cash back
The cash back option is good if you have already decided to use real nappies. Leeds City Council is offering £30 cash back on purchases over £50 from any supplier. This option does not include nappy accessories and proof of purchase will be required to claim the cash back.

This option allows you to:

• Choose your own style of nappy
• Use a nappy laundering service (see suppliers list)

Am I eligible for the real nappy incentive?

• The child’s parents or guardian must be a resident within Leeds City Council boundary.
• The child must be under 12 months old or the expectant mother in receipt of a Mat B1 form.

1) Dry on the line

Save money and energy costs by drying your reusable nappies on the washing line – if you are lucky enough to get a very sunny day the UV rays will bleach the material giving you glowing white nappies.

2) Save on conditioner

Fabric conditioner coats each fibre of the material that makes up a nappy – this stops them from absorbing any liquid.

3) Quick Fluffy Nappies

For a quick fluff up on cotton nappies pop them in the tumble dryer for a minute every so often.

4) Forget the Boil Wash.

With modern detergents you can get real nappies just as clean at lower temperatures, especially if they have been soaked first.

5) Put the Iron Away

Reusable nappies work best when they are NOT ironed because ironing flattens the fibres and makes them less absorbent.

6) Get a bucket (with a lid)

Some people wet pail (keeping the nappies in the bucket in water) and some dry pail but whichever way you choose you will need a bucket with a lid to store dirty nappies until they are ready to tip into the machine.

7) Use a Mesh

A nappy mesh is a bag that fits inside the bucket to make washing real nappies easier. Just put the whole thing into your washing machine but leave it untied so the nappies can work themselves out as they get clean.
Tea Tree Oil

A few drops of tea tree oil inside the nappy bucket, or even in the wash will help to neutralise smells and as it is naturally anti bacterial it will help to sterilise the nappies too – you only need a couple of drops!

9) Use a Nappy Liner

Washable or disposable, nappy liners are vital. With fleece ones the poo just falls off down the toilet and if the nappy itself is not wet you can just put in another liner.

10) Reusable wipes

Washable wipes are just as good as disposable ones.  Wet them under the tap with warm water before you use them, or soak in chamomile tea for nappy rash.

11) Don’t Dry on the Radiator

Cotton nappies can dry very hard on a radiator – if you have to radiator dry consider bamboo nappies because they stay fluffy.

PARENTS can find out about the benefits of using cloth nappies at a roadshow in Whitby next Friday (20 May).

Scarborough Borough Council and real nappy guru Jody Smith will be showing parents how switching to cloth nappies can save them some money and help the environment to celebrate Real Nappy Week which runs from 16 to 20 May.

The roadshow will be visiting New Quay Road on Friday 20 May from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.

Donna Gaddass, recycling education officer for Scarborough Borough Council said: “Real nappies are great for the environment and great for your pocket too. “We are pleased to be working with Jody Smith to show parents and parents to be just how fantastic modern cloth nappies are.

“Also courtesy of Fill your Pants we will be offering people who stop by, free entry into our prize draw to win a real nappy trial kit.”

Using cloth nappies rather than disposables helps to reduce waste, and can save parents more than £500 and using disposable nappies can cost up to £732 by the time a baby is potty trained, with 6,000 nappies going to landfill. In comparison, a baby will only need 25 to 30 real nappies, which will cost as little as £185 including washing.

Cloth nappies can be washed at 60 degrees and come in a range of designs. New and expectant mums will have the opportunity to speak to a real nappy expert and see the whole range of real nappies which are available for babies of all shapes and sizes.

To celebrate Real Nappy Week, Wyre Forest District Council, together with Worcestershire County Council and Honeybee’s Natural Nursery Store, is hosting a Free Real Nappy Picnic and Family Fun Day.

The event takes place at Worcester Woods Country Park, Worcester on Saturday, May 21, from 11am to 1pm. Real Nappy Week runs from next Monday until May 21.

Parents and parents-to-be can find out all they need to know about real nappies.

The event starts with the Real Nappy Picnic, where there will be changing demonstrations, a real nappy fashion show, advice and information from families already using real nappies as well as local children’s services information such as from the National Childbirth Trust, Children’s Centres and Family Information Service.

There is also a competition to win a full set or day set of real nappies, a free goodie bag to the first 50 visitors and baby massage demonstrations and buggy fit trial.

Conservative councillor Nathan Desmond, Wyre Forest District Council’s cabinet member for resources said: “This is a really helpful event because the issue of disposable nappies going to landfill is significant.

“Over 3 billion disposable nappies are thrown away every year in the UK, 90 per cent of which are sent to landfill. One baby will use about 4,000 nappies between birth and potty training.”

To demonstrate that, Jo Duffield, Wyre Forest District Council’s waste minimisation officer, built a “nappy mountain”, which represented the amount of rubbish just one baby will produce solely from nappy waste.

Ms Duffield said: “There are 52 bags in the nappy mountain to represent a year’s worth of waste for one child whilst the alternative is 20 real nappies that would last the same child from birth until potty-training.

“I have two children in real nappies and find them so easy and convenient to use. Even our childminder is happy to use them. There’s a large amount of money to be saved with using real nappies, too, with savings between £500 and £1,500, depending on which system is used.”

We had a lovely day in Heavitree, Exeter yesterday, enjoying the sun and the festive wedding atmosphere and talking to lots of parents and parents-to-be about reusable nappies.

I love getting out to these sorts of events – people can be so surprised to see what modern cloth nappies look like and just how easy they are to use.

Real Nappy Week stand in Princesshay

We will be attending as part of the Devon Real Nappy Project so come along to find out all about washable nappies, how they can save you money and all about the FREE nappy trial kit offer from Devon CC.

We will be handing out a limited number of FREE goodie bags, so come along early to make sure you get one!

Parents can either get a free trial pack or £30 cash back when they spend £50 on real nappies.

Trial packs
These are a good way to try the system, especially if it’s your first baby or if you don’t know much about the real nappy system.

The trial pack includes:

• 1 Bum Genius v3 nappy
• 1 Pop-in nappy
• 10 x disposable paper liners
• Instructions and a list of suppliers

These are shaped nappies which can be adjusted to fit as your baby grows.

Cash back
The cash back option is good if you have already decided to use real nappies. Leeds City Council is offering £30 cash back on purchases over £50 from any supplier. This option does not include nappy accessories and proof of purchase will be required to claim the cash back.

This option allows you to:

• Choose your own style of nappy
• Use a nappy laundering service (see suppliers list)

Am I eligible for the real nappy incentive?

• The child’s parents or guardian must be a resident within Leeds City Council boundary.
• The child must be under 12 months old or the expectant mother in receipt of a Mat B1 form.
• To apply for a trial pack or cash back please download a claim form and return to the address listed below with the relevant documentation as indicated on the claim form.
• One trial pack or cash back is available per child.

The kits contain a range of nappies that have been chosen by local sellers as being the best on the market. You can hire a kit for free for two weeks, all we ask is that you provide them with a cheque for £100 as a deposit. This cheque will not be cashed, and will be returned to you when you return the kit to our volunteer.

The kit comes with information cards about each nappy and how to use them. There are also contact details and product listings for all the local sellers, who are members of the Alliance, and can offer you lots of advice and support as well.

The kits are available to anyone in North Somerset, and are currently being administered by Emma in Banwell. If you would like a kit you can contact emma@northsomersetnappies.org.uk to arrange a booking.

We have just received this review of our 3 pack of Nappi Nippas:

Brilliant product – recommended!

I bought these because I was worried about accidentally hurting baby with nappy pins… I was sceptical as to whether they’d work or not.

However, they really are great.  They have clever little grippers with are sharp enough to grab the fabric but not so pointy or big that they would ever hurt the baby.

Three in a pack also means you have spares if you lose any.

Great idea… I’d be lost without them now!

London households ‘waste’ around £20million a year throwing away tonnes of disposable nappies, according to research. Real Nappies for London (RNfL) thinks this is a waste of money when there is a zero waste alternative of washable nappies. Reusable nappies can also have a 40% less global warming impact than disposables if washed and dried in an eco-friendly way.

To draw attention to this issue during Climate Week toddlers will be strutting their stuff at a very special fashion show on 24 March, in Coram’s Fields.

For those who don’t know about it, it is big PR exercise carried out mostly in USA but all around the world, with about 10 locations in the UK and I would love for there to be one down here in the South West.

Basically, you just turn up at the allocated time, change a cloth nappy and hopefully break the world record and get some publicity for cloth nappies.

If I can get enough people interested, I am happy to organise a space in Exeter, get some simple refreshements in and (hopefully) get the local paper to turn up too.

I think to make it newsworthy, we would need at least 20 people to take part and would love to hit the 50 mark.

It is scheduled for Sat 23 April at (I think) 4pm – it is listed in Pacific time and I want to make sure my conversion is still right after the clocks change!

These are brilliant.  Much easier to use than cotton wool or disposable wipes, nice & soft & a good size.  Easy to put in the wash with the nappies & wash up well.  Wish I had bought more than one pack though!

When I received these nappies, I could not believe just how soft they are. I am totally new to cloth nappies and found these so easy to use. My daughter is a small 1 year old and these fit her perfectly. We did initially have a few leaks but that was down to not having the height of the nappy adjusted properly.

 They also dry surprisingly quickly, as do the microfiber inserts, but the bamboo booster does take quite a bit longer to dry. I have used these at night, with the bamboo booster and it works really well. 

I was also surprised at how well they washed. My little girl had a bad tummy on the second day we used the nappies and we had no leaks and no stains on the nappies after they had been washed.

I love these nappies so much, I will be buying some more.

Here’s what Claire had to say:

Everything about the Wonderoo nappy is soft and squishy – the Minky wrap, the bamboo and microterry inserts, right down to the elastic around the legs.  That alone made me love this nappy from the start.

As Cecilie is only 14 weeks old, and not the chunkiest of babies, I have found that so many of the pocket nappies that I’ve used are a bit bulky, particularly when folding the regular inserts.  The Wonderoo’s Bamboo insert somehow seems to fit the nappy no matter what size setting you have it on.  The smaller microterry insert feels thicker (but strangely lighter) than others I have tried and is slightly shaped so doesn’t create a huge wedge in between the legs.  I didn’t try both inserts together, that would have been too much cloth for a little baby.  Using only one of the inserts at a time, the nappy has only leaked once in the few weeks we’ve been using it – and that was after one of those ‘explosive’ moments – quite forgivable under the circumstances. 

I liked the single line of poppers rather than the double row you tend to see on a lot of Birth To Potty nappies, it made putting on a bit easier, although, I did find that the single row ‘pulled’ and this made the nappy try to unfold itself from the smaller sized setting that it had been set on.  What is great, is the ability to overlap the poppers so the nappy can be secured on even the smallest of tummies.

As for washing – the bamboo insert takes ages to dry if just left on a clothes horse (not line drying weather yet), but I guess that’s just testament to how absorbent it is.  The minky and the microterry insert however dry in no time.  The biggest bonus is that the nappy appears to be stain resistant, so no marks left after a wash.

All-in-all, this nappy looks good, feels so soft, fits great and most of all holds it all in.  I love it, definitely my favourite nappy in our collection.
