Free Real Nappy Trial Pack for Wealden Parents

The trial pack is available to Wealden’s parents to borrow free of charge for approximately one month, allowing them to try washable nappies and see which ones suit them best before they purchase a set. The pack includes a wide range of the different types of modern washable nappies on the market, including some nappies made from bamboo, which is a greener alternative to cotton. The trial pack is available in two sizes – Birth to six months and six months to potty.

Types of Nappies

There are three different types of washable nappies currently available on the market:

Prefold nappies – these are flat squares of cloth which are folded and placed into a waterproof cover
Shaped nappies – these have a neat, precise fit with either poppers or velcro. They come in various sizes or a one size fits all from birth to potty, where the size is adjusted with poppers at the front or back of the nappy. They are then placed in a waterproof outer cover which comes in various different sizes.
All-in-one nappies – These are available in various sizes and have a built in waterproof outer cover.

The different types of nappies included in these packs are:

We currently have five birth to six month trial packs and two six month to potty trial packs available so there may be a slight delay of approximately a month or two before we are able to issue the nappies. Please note all the nappies are laundered to NHS standards.

Disposable nappies now account for four per cent of all household waste with the average baby going through 5,000 nappies from birth to potty training. Disposing of all these nappies costs the taxpayer around £40 million a year.

Approximately 8 million disposable nappies are used in the UK every day, with around 7.5 million ending up in landfill sites. Once there, they then take up to 500 years to decompose.

Cloth Nappies, also known as real nappies, cotton nappies, reusable nappies and washable nappies are a natural and gentle alternative to disposables. They are made from soft, breathable cotton and, when used with a liner and a waterproof cover, they are reliable and comfortable.

Although there have been no scientific trials to date, both parents and health professionals have recognised that a child in cloth nappies will become potty trained quicker than those in disposables. Because the child is able to feel some wetness this awareness acts as stimulant to encourage your child to use a potty.

Although all nappies have some environmental impact, you can help to reduce nappy waste going to landfill by using cloth nappies. Cloth nappies also work out cheaper than disposables, saving you up to £500 until your child is potty trained.

We have been sent this request which I am happy to share:

Can I ask for your support and to sign and share this petition? http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/24494
if it gets at least 100,000 signatures, it will be eligible for debate in the House of Commons.

The petition is not anti-formula it is anti the marketing/advertising of it (For every baby born Approx £20 is spent to promote Formula by its companies compared to about 14 pence spent by the UK government to promote breastfeeding).

It’s part of a bigger picture that strives for formula to be the exception not the norm and to encourage breastfeeding and the support offered to mothers to succeed at it. The ban IS in place throughout Scandinavia where the breastfeeding rates are far far higher than here in the UK.

This is an important issue to me but it is in no way meant to offend anyone at all.

Did you carry on using your cloth nappies over the Christmas break?

I did mostly but did mix and match with some of the Flip Disposable inserts, so I didn’t need to put the tumble dryer on with all that rain we had.

I don’t feel too bad about this as we hadn’t used any disposable nappies since we had the water switched back on after the kitchen was re-done.

I still have some left in the pack of 18 Flip inserts that I opened before Christmas. so it goes to show that you can fit reusable nappies in around having a good time during the holidays.

Breastmilk is the normal food for babies under 6 months old (and a vital part of their nutritional needs for much longer) but there are some occasions when a mother is unable to nurse her own baby, such as when the mother is sick or the baby is premature.

In these cases, donated breastmilk improves the health outcome for the baby and is the preferred option over formula.

I have been lucky enough to be accepted as a breastmilk donor for our local hospital, so most days I pump a bottle full and stash in the freezer ready to take batches up to the RD&E.

The milk will be used to give feeds to sick and premature babies in the NNU, rather than supplement with artificial formula, until such time as the mother is able to nurse her baby herself.

I consider myself to be very fortunate as I have a good supply and, following some initial difficulties, find breastfeeding my children to be very easy and rewarding.

This is my way of showing my gratitude and of helping out other families in their time of need.

New Year Resolutions

The New Year is traditionally seen as a time of renewal, of rebirth, a chance to put the old behind you and look to the future, all reflected in the obligatory New Year’s Resolution.

The problem I have with NY Resolutions is that they are always focused on you as a person, a promise to be a better person, to miraculously change who you are, as if making one simple promise is all it takes to become the mythical being you have always wanted to be.

This year I am going to take my cue from The Eden Project (followers of Exeter Baby Activities will already know about our fab family day out there yesterday) and adapt their Seven Gifts and Wishes.

So my New Year’s Resolution is to share one of these each day and keep a blog diary each week to see how I am doing.

Health and Wellbeing

I love this idea from the Eden Project – I can see that some of them are going to be hard to do on a regular basis but they will encourage me to give back some of my time and energy, to focus outwards rather than purely inwards.

So much television programming is aimed at young children. Much of it appears to be educational: teaching the ABCs and life skills. When is it appropriate to introduce a baby to television, and what do parents need to know about this topic?

A great deal of research has been done on the effects of television on children’s lives. The first step in making the decision is to get the facts. Because nearly all of us have one or more TV sets in our home, and since most of us watch some TV nearly every day, we may not want to hear what research tells us, but these are things parents need to know.

Experts suspect that babies younger than two years old view TV as a confusing array of colors, images, and noises. They don’t understand much of the content. Since the average TV scene lasts five to eight seconds, your baby or toddler doesn’t have enough time to digest what’s happening.

Cartoons and many children’s shows are filled with images of violence. If you find this hard to believe, surf the TV on Saturday morning. The realism portrayed in today’s cartoons has moved light years beyond the Bugs Bunny type of violence. Many children’s shows almost are animated versions of adult action films. Research shows that exposure to this type of programming increases the risk of aggressive behavior and desensitizes children to violence.
Babies and toddlers have a very literal view of the world. They can’t yet tell the difference between real and pretend, and they interpret what they see on TV as true life. Research has demonstrated that many young children believe that TV characters actually live inside the TV set. This can confuse young children’s understanding of the world and get in the way of their learning what’s right or wrong. It can paint a picture of a frightening, unstable, and bewildering world ¾ and your little one does not yet have the faculties to put what he sees into proper perspective.

Television watching can be addictive. The more that children watch, the more they want to watch. Even toddlers can become drawn to the set. Once addicted, turning off the TV can become a daily battle. Children who watch TV excessively often become passive and lose their natural creativity; they eventually have a hard time keeping themselves busy, and they lose valuable time that should be dedicated to “play” ¾ the foundation of a healthy childhood and the primary way that very young children learn.
Parents sometimes unwittingly begin to use TV more and more as a way to keep their children happy and quiet. It takes a strong will and dedication to avoid the easy route provided by this free and easy ¾ yet sometimes dangerous ¾ babysitter.
Children experience unparalleled physical, mental, and emotional growth in the early years of life. Time spent watching television is time taken away from more healthful activities that nurture growth and development.
Children who watch a lot of television during their early years are at risk for childhood obesity, poor social development, and aggressive behavior. They often have trouble adjusting to preschool or kindergarten. According to a study by Yale Family Television Research, teachers characterized children who watched excessive television as less cooperative, less imaginative, less enthusiastic about learning, and less happy than those who watched little or no TV.
Due to all the above reasons, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that parents not allow children under two to watch any television.

You may have noticed that all of these points demonstrate the negative aspects of letting babies and toddlers watch TV, and you’re wondering if there are any positives. There are a few, but I’ll be honest: I had to be very creative to come up with this list, since published research doesn’t demonstrate many good points for putting a young child in front of a television. But we need to be realistic and acknowledge that most of us aren’t going to put our TVs in the closet until all of our children start school. Here are some of the good points of television for children:

Quality children’s programming can teach your child basic academic skills, such as the ABCs, counting, addition, science fundamentals, basic language skills, manners, and even early reading skills.
Your child can view things she might not otherwise see in daily life: exotic animals, distant lands, musical instruments, historical places, and diverse lifestyles. Your child can learn about the world beyond her home and neighborhood.
Your child can learn basic social skills from watching wholesome programming: how to play with other children, how to use good manners.
Using extraordinarily careful selection and restraint, a little bit of television can provide a parent with much-needed down time, or time to catch up on tasks that need adult-only attention.

TV watching tips for parents of babies and young children

The following tips may help you minimize the negative and maximize the positive effects of television watching for your little one:

Hold off introducing television,even videosto your baby as long as possible. If you wait until your child’s second birthday, you can consider yourself incredibly successful in starting your little one off well and with the kind of real-life interaction that is so important for his development. If you decide to allow TV before your child turns two, choose programming carefully, limit viewing time and skip days when possible. (Daily viewing easily becomes habit.) The less watching time, the better! Set a goal, such as no more than 30 minutes or an hour per day, or one favorite show, so that you’ll not be tempted to turn the TV on too frequently.

Watch programs yourself before you allow your baby or toddler to watch them. Just because a network markets a show to young children doesn’t mean it will reflect your own family’s morals and values. You will be amazed to discover that many programs aimed at children contain violence or topics that are inappropriate for your child. Don’t assume that your baby can pick out the moral message from a program that features violence or conflict on the way to an important lesson.
Pay attention to commercials,surprisingly, an excellent children’s show will sometimes feature commercials that depict the exact things you don’t want your little one to see!

Choose programs that are developmentally appropriate for your child. For you, this means shows that are slow, boring, and probably somewhat goofy. But choose programs from your child’s perspective, not your own.
Invest in a collection of appropriate and educational videos for your child so that you won’t be confined to network programming schedules when you are ready to let your little one watch something.
Watch along with your child when you can so that you can monitor your child’s reactions to what he’s seeing. Invite questions and discuss what you are watching so that you can understand your little one’s take. Point things out and talk about what is being taught to get the most of out of educational TV. You may even follow up with some lessons afterwards.
Avoid keeping the TV on when no one is actively watching. Many people do this and are used to the background noise the set generates, but your child will almost surely be exposed to programming that is inappropriate for her.
Make a conscious decision about how you will use television in your family; don’t watch it by accident or default.

In a hospital scan department. It was shocking. Small cramped, filthy and absolutly stunk!

We were at the mall, and my daughter had a big mushy poop. It came out the side of her nappy. When I took off her pants, it smeared all over her legs and on the change pad. As I was trying to clean it up, she started playing with it. So, it got all over Everything. Another mom came in and said “Looks like someone has had an explosion

And great places but embarrassing situations:

I took my baby daughter out with me to meet up with my friend for lunch. We ended up in a really fancy place and she decided to do a huge poop. And the only changing facilities were in the ladies toilets. So as I was her daddy I couldnt go in. The staff pulled a huge expensive marble table out and put their best table cloths on it for me to change her. Was so embarrassed!!

And truly embarrassing and difficult situations:

The worst place Ive had to change a nappy was at a garden centre near my parents. It has a really posh shop section full of glass vases and whatnot. My LO had a truly obnoxious nappy explosion all over himself AND the buggy. They didnt have any changing facilities so I had to give the poopy baby to my mum while I cleaned the buggy so I could change him on the buggy cos I cant sit on the floor due to disability. So there I am, swiping at poop on the buggy while lovely older ladies walk passed with disapproving faces.

To top it all off, when I had finally changed LO and got him back in the buggy and started to move away, I saw that some poop had made it onto the expensive looking white shelving nearby. Needless to say, I wiped it off and legged it.

8 Top Tips for Keeping Cloth Nappies Soft and Fluffy

When it is cold and wet a lot of people rely on radiators to dry their real nappies. If you live in a hard water area this could mean that your nappies go a bit hard. Some nappies are better than others for hard water areas:

The Flip Nappies from bumGenius are good for hard water areas, and they dry relatively quickly too. They are one size nappies, easy to use, you need a cover and an insert that can be disposable or washable, if you want to learn more please visit our Quick Guide to Flip Nappy System

One of the other reusable nappies we recommend at the Natural Nursery for hard water areas is the bumGenius. This is a birth to potty pocket nappy and it is also a relatively quick dryer.

1) Use a fleece liner to reduce the amount of hard nappy touching your babies skin.

Fleece liners are cheap, colourful and they can be washed and re-used hundreds of times. They are soft against your baby’s skin and help to wick the wet away from the bottom, meaning a more comfortable baby.

2) Scrunch the nappy up and rub it hard between your hands after it has dried.

The idea here is to physically fluff up the fibres of the nappy. It is mostly the movement in a tumble dryer that helps to keep a nappy soft so anything you can do to replicate that helps.

3) Hang the nappy out on the line if possible

Grab every opportunity to give your cloth nappies a bit of line drying time as they will be softer than if they are dried on a radiator. If you really have to radiator dry try to keep the nappies away from the radiator a little – either by using an airer that hooks over the radiator or by drying on chair backs next to the radiator.

4) Tumble dry nappies now and again if possible.

A once a month tumble dry will give your nappies a boost, I used to take mine to my mum’s for a nappy spa day, or I’d use a launderette once in a while.

5) Reduce the amount of washing powder you use.

Washing powders can build up on fabric, stiffening it and making it less asorbent. Once in a while try just running the nappies through on a hot wash with no powder to strip them of anything that might be making them hard.

6) Put a small cupful of white distilled vinegar into the wash.

White vinegar is great for neutralising smells and for softening hard water. You just put it in the conditioner drawer. I have used ordinary vinegar in desperation and it works just as well, just smells more vinegary than the distilled stuff.

7) Do an extra fast spin at the end of the wash.

The logic here is to remove as much water from the nappies as possible so they need less time to dry.

Add bicarbonate of soda to the washing powder.

This helps to soften the water, you can use it with white distilled vinegar as well to remove stains. Half a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda is more than enough.

Epsom & Ewell Borough Council does not favour any one brand of nappies. We believe that only you can make the decision on which nappies best suit you, your baby and family. The nappies included within the trial kit are examples of nappy styles available. You may find that your local nappy stockist sell a similar style under a different brand name.

What’s in a kit?

There are 24 trial kits available in Surrey and each one holds everything you need to road test Real Nappies on your baby. There are a range of Real Nappy types including flat nappies, shaped nappies, pocket and all-in-one nappies. We also include waterproof wraps, flushable and washable liners, washable wipes, nappy soak, wet bags, a laundry mesh and a nappy bucket. Go Real are unable to guarantee a specific brand of nappy but all of the main types will be covered and so you will be able to make an informed choice based on the trial.

How will I know how everything works?

Each kit is managed by a trial kit host who will explain to you everything that is in the kit and how to use it. There will also be a DVD, information leaflet and guide in each kit so if you can’t remember anything when you get home you will have some tools to help you. You can also give the Go Real team a call at any time during your trial for advice on 0800 328 8175¹, it is free to call them and they can make sure that you talk to someone who has used Real Nappies themselves. Alternatively you can email them your query to: advice@goreal.org.uk.

How do I get a Kit?

All you need to do is ring Go Real free of charge on 0800 328 8175¹ or email us at advice@goreal.org.uk. We will then put you in touch with your nearest trial kit host. £30 Real Nappy Incentive for Medway Residents

Medway Council has a scheme that can help you if you are thinking about reusable nappies. They are good for your baby’s health, good for the environment, cheap and easy to use.

Reusable nappies have changed since the traditional terry nappies. There is a wide choice of designs, styles and colours. Many even look like disposable nappies. If you are still not sure, why not come along and have a coffee at one of the monthly nappucinos?

An important incentive

A £30 financial incentive, payable in three instalments, is being offered to parents who join the scheme. You can claim this when nappies are bought from a shop or the internet if a proof of purchase and validation form signed by a healthcare professional is sent to the Waste Minimisation Team at Medway Council. For a validation form, ask your midwife or health visitor.

If you purchase your nappies before your child has been born a copy of the birth certificate will need to be sent to the nappy agent after the birth. If the nappies have been bought from an online site or from a high street retailer then an incentive will be paid in the form of Boots vouchers issued by Medway Council.

If you have been using reusable nappies on a previous child, you can only claim for that child for the period of time they have been using reusable nappies within the current financial year.

If you have been given nappies from a friend to use on your child, you will be entitled to the incentive as there is still a reduction in nappy waste. You will need a validation form signed by your healthcare professional to validate the claim.

Claims are settled within 14 days of receiving all correct paperwork.

Nappy library

This lets parents try some of the vast range of modern cloth nappies available before making a big financial commitment. All parents in Medway can hire one of the comprehensive nappy library kits for a fortnight and find out which nappies work best for them.

Cost

When purchasing nappies you need to consider how quickly you can wash and dry them. It is recommended to have three days worth of nappies. Most babies require approximately six changes a day.

The approximate cost of purchasing and home laundering real nappies for two and a half years ranges from £185 to about £352 depending on nappy type.

Monthly nappucinos

Come along to a relaxed drop-in atmosphere, have a coffee, meet other parents and carers using cloth nappies. Find out more about the benefits of using cloth, see the choices available and have a chat with like-minded people.

Nappucinos are run on the first Monday of every month (excluding bank holidays) from 9.30 to 11.30am, at Lordswood Children’s Centre, Lordswood School, Lordswood Lane.

Saturday club

If you cannot make the Monday events, the Medway Cloth Nappy Network (MCNN) and the Medway Branch of the National Childbirth Trust runs monthly Saturday drop-in groups at Moat House, Crow Lane, Rochester on the third Saturday of the month from 2.30-4pm

An enormous thanks to Olga for letting us re-post her incredible research about the cost of real versus disposable nappies. Olga has set up Green Fluffy Bottoms which is a Facebook group dedicated to real nappy advice and chat. It was established in July 2011 and has been very active ever since. They are a mixture of experienced real nappy users and complete beginners, always happy to answer any cloth related questions.

An average child potty trains about 2.5 years old = 912 days in nappies

ERGObaby’s Performance Baby Carrier great for Mums and Dads!

ERGObaby’s Performance baby carriers are made of durable, lightweight, and breathable fabric and can accommodate all active moms and dads.

Just in at the Natural Nursery is this lovely new colourway; Charcoal Grey and Black go with almost anything and are perfect for mums and dads. We have been asking about babywearing dads on the Natural Nursery Facebook Page and some mums say that dads are really happy to carry their children but they prefer the slings to be in neutral colours.

Alison sent us in this review that tells you a lot about the Performance Carrier:

“I am delighted with my Ergo Performance. My baby is a really ‘hot-blooded’ little boy and both he and I were overheating with wrap carriers. We both stay nice and cool with this.

My husband really likes this carrier as it looks quite sporty and he has found it really comfy to use (6″1, size Large). I on the other hand am only 5’2″/size 10 and also find this carrier very comfy. Of note, the shoulder straps are different to the original – they are not thick and squishy but firmer and thinner. However, I have never found them uncomfy even after hours. They are also more tapered and come in closer together. I was worried this might mean they rubbed on my neck. However, having tried both the Performance and Original I found these actually a much better fit – the original straps are very bulky and wide-set and meant it kind of hung off my outer shoulders and pulled. So some smaller ladies may find the straps rub on their neck but I’ve actually found this a much better fit.

Although this is not a ‘waterproof’ carrier, I have survived 30mins in a big downpour. I had my regular-sized waterproof coat on over and was able to do this up at the bottom (below the Ergo) to cover my son’s legs. I put the Ergo hood up, tucked his arms in and scampered home! I was impressed to find an essentially dry baby underneath when I got in, who had enjoyed the adventure! The lightweight nature of this carrier also meant it then dried out quickly.

Overall, a functional, versatile carrier which is comfy for 2 very different sized people and also very easy to adjust between us.”

Are reusable nappies worth the effort?

Will using cloth nappies on your bundle of joy save you a bundle of cash?

6,000 nappies. That’s the number of changes my infant son is likely to need between birth and potty training, according to official estimates. That’s a figure to make any penny pincher gulp.

Not only that, I also get a twinge of eco guilt every time I open my bin and see endless nappy bags ready to go to landfill.

According to Go Real, a UK website supporting the use of washable nappies, new parents can kit their babies out for less than £80, if they use the cheapest option.

Even factoring in £1 a week to cover the extra washing costs, it estimates parents can save upwards of £500 by using cloth nappies instead of disposables. That’s a serious sum, so I’ve been wondering if it’s time to change how I change my baby.

Green-minded mum

I met Sarah, a north-west mum who uses washable nappies and even reusable baby wipes on her son. This is primarily to reduce what they send to landfill, but also to save some money.

So how much has she spent getting set up in real nappies? “I would estimate that we have spent approximately £450 on nappies, wet bags, a nappy bucket, boosters, wraps and a few other related items. But it is possible to kit yourself out for much less… We spent more than we needed to as we wanted enough nappies not to have to do a wash every day.

Do the sums add up?

If I bought nappies in small bags, they would cost around 22p each. Over 6,000 nappies, that would mean an eye-watering £1,320 in total.

But I buy them in bulk, at a cost of around 10p each. So if my son goes through 6,000 nappies, it will cost me £600.

Compare that to Sarah’s £450 spend and it looks like cloth nappies win hands down. But the Go Real campaign reckons you’ll spend about £1 a week washing them, including detergent and heating, adding at least another £104 to her costs.

However, she can still save more than £46. After all, if they have more than one baby then she can reuse them again and, when she’s done, there are many websites where you can sell second-hand cloth nappies.

If you’re considering washable nappies but are worried about the upfront cost, there are lots of council-run incentive schemes that can help.

So there’s certainly a compelling financial argument, but how much hassle are they?

So are reusable nappies worth the effort?

Landfill isn’t infinite or desirable, so it’s obvious there’s a compelling environmental case for switching to reusables.

But they are undeniably quite a lot of extra work. You need to have a constant production line of washing, drying and stuffing if you’re going to always have a dry nappy ready. That takes some serious organisation, which some sleep-starved parents may not be able to face.

If you spend a few hundred quid on cloth nappies then your savings will be quite comparatively small, but if you use the cheaper Terry squares or buy them second hand then you could save a fortune over just one baby.

Am I a convert? There’s definitely a case for switching but I’ll probably try to find a middle ground. If I use at least one cloth nappy a day then I can cut back on the financial and environmental cost without sacrificing the convenience.

“The 4.0 comes with two inserts, so you can add extra absorbancy as your baby needs it. So far we have only used one and it’s been fine. You can just throw the nappy in the wash (after removing it from your baby) and during washing the insert makes it way out of the nappy. After drying all you need to do is stuff the insert back in and away you go. So all in all a good nappy and I can’t see how any day care provider would have a problem with using it, super simple to put on and a fairly leak proof option.”

It is a London-wide scheme to provide parents with an opportunity to try real nappies and it has been running since July 2007. Many boroughs offer money off vouchers, or free trials for parents who want to try real nappies.

If you live in London and want to see if there is an incentive in your area check the list of boroughs here.

This article is from the website www.staffnurse.com and is about relieving pain in newborn babies that are in Intensive care. The research team found that babies who are breastfed whilst being vaccinated had less pain than babies put on an examination table;

“Breastfeeding and massages may help to reduce pain in newborns, delegates at a European conference have heard. Studies presented at the EFIC Congress in Hamburg, Germany have demonstrated that simple, non-pharmacological measures are very soothing to babies in the first days of life.

Dr Luis Batalha told delegates that a Portuguese study found that support staff relied on comforting techniques to help newborns in intensive care. “Nurses apply non-pharmacological measures often and successfully, such as massages, various comforting techniques and turning the infant over,” he said. “But other more gentle therapies should also be encouraged, such as breastfeeding by the mother or administering of sugar in the form of glucose or sucrose.”

Dr Simin Taavoni , from the University of Tehran, said that infants who are breastfed by their mothers while being vaccinated for diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus (DPT) suffered less pain than those babies who had to lie on an examination table while they had the intramuscular injections. “With the simple and safe intervention of breastfeeding, doctors and other health care personnel can significantly reduce pain during injections and vaccinations,” she said.

Meanwhile, another study that was conducted by a Portuguese-Canadian research group found that preterm babies in intensive care suffered less pain during blood tests if they had a combination of succerose, a dummy (pacifier) and skin-to-skin contact with their mother, known as kangaroo care.

“They also slept during the intervention more frequently, and on average returned more quickly to a normal heart rate at a gestational age of at least 32 weeks,” said Dr Ananda Maria Fernandes, from Coimbra, Portugal.”

“Easy to care for” Organic Wool Nappy Wrap gets top marks

These organic wool nappy wraps are beautifully soft overpants made from two layers of knitted new wool.

Wool is naturally watertight and the soft knit construction allows plenty of air to circulate and they are ideal for babies with sensitive skin. The soft ribbing around the legs and waist hold the pants firmly in place without the need for elastic. Very comfortable and very economical.

You will need to lanolise these pants before using but the oil in the wool will keep them watertight and help them “clean themselves” – just air them in between uses.

When they need washing, use a wool shampoo and lanolin conditioner to maintain the oil content and keep them waterproof.

“My baby has been wearing these since birth and they are very easy to care for. Poo washes out very easily (unlike cotton) and they keep the air circulating even in warm weather. Family with 9 children saves money with Cloth Nappies!

The Sullivan family have 9 children, from 18 years to 11 months and twins on the way. Their incredible blog is called ‘Larger Family Life’ and it is jammed full of interesting stuff. Mum Tania is blogging her twin pregnancy, writing about baking, homeschooling and loads of ideas for saving money that are good for big or small families.

“One of the main questions we often get as a large family is, “How do you afford it?”. I talk in more detail about our history and how we got to where we are now in our book. We aren’t wealthy by any means but we get by.

I have two boxes like the one in the photo above, all filled with nappies. I only have three different types in there. One for newborns, one for bigger babies and toddlers and a supply of terry squares which are adaptable for all. Every eighteen months or so, normally when a new baby is due, I will go through the supplies and check which nappies are threadbare and beyond padding out with terries or muslins and, accepting they have served their purpose and will use them as cleaning rags before finally throwing them out. I will throw out any wraps which are no longer usable and I will then replenish the stocks of nappies and wraps which will normally last another 12-18 months or so.

As I haven’t thrown out everything and started from scratch it isn’t very costly to do this every year or two and given that these nappies are used every single day for the last eight years I have certainly got my money’s worth from making the switch. My nappy supply top up every year and a half usually costs me no more than £100-£150 which is sufficient for the 2-3 children who are normally using them at a time. If you compare this to having to purchase one pack of disposables per child per week, say at £6.50 on average for the more well known brands, that comes to £19.50 a week. Even if I were to use a cheaper, generic brand at around £3.70 per pack, for example, I would still be spending £11.10 every week. We could be spending between £45 and £78 on nappies each month bringing the cost to £810 – £1404 every eighteen months, a lot more than the £100 – £150 I spend on them.

When the twins arrive this figure would rise as there would be four in nappies full-time (with one using them at night only, but I’m not including that in the figures). That makes it around £15 – £26 per week on disposables. That is a lot of money and I haven’t even included the cost of wipes either which can easily add another five or ten pounds a week.”

Another way to save money on cloth nappies is with a local council incentive. There are many schemes around the country that give you money back when you buy reusable nappies or free trials. Check out the list on the Natural Nursery to see if your council is involved.

Flip Reusable Nappies – So easy to use!

Flip washable nappies are very easy to use and consist of a waterproof outer layer and an absorbent inner.

You can choose whether to use a stay-dry insert, an organic cotton insert or a disposable insert.

If you have organic cotton inserts, wash them several times to ensure they are fully absorbent.

To use the Flip Nappy System

FLIP the used insert into your nappy bucket
REPLACE the insert with a clean one
REUSE the cover

First – adjust the nappy cover to the size required:

Adjust the insert as required:

Organic cotton insert: can be folded one way for a newborn and the other way to make a longer pad for older baby.

Stay-dry insert: follow the embroidered folding lines on the insert:

Fit the insert under the flaps at the back and front of the cover. The flaps will hold the insert securely in place.

If you are using organic cotton inserts, you may like to use a paper liner, most parents don’t need to with the stay-dry inserts.

Put the nappy on your baby just as you would a disposable nappy, checking the legs openings and waist to ensure a good fit.

When you are ready to change your baby, toss the used insert into your nappy bucket (you can flick any solids straight down the loo).

Wipe out the nappy cover and pop in a new insert before replacing on your baby.

You can reuse the nappy cover up to 5 times before washing.

This is from the blog of a mum Alice, from Nottinghamshire who is trying out reusable nappies. Her blog “Mummy, Not Big Milk Thing” is stuffed full of interesting articles, especially this one:

“So what do I want from a cloth nappy? Well I think I want what many consumers are looking for, simplicity. I don’t want to be confused by jargon and bogged down having to mess around for hours just to have clean nappies to put on my baby – I don’t have time and quite frankly I’m too lazy! We all like disposable because we take them out of the packet, slap it on the baby and then off it comes after and we can forget about it. We have a reluctance to change this system because it works for us, its easy and if something is much more complicated than that, well we are bound to just give up, right?

So I need something simple and easy to use, I also need something that I can rely on and that isn’t going to fail me at a crucial moment – so far with disposable it seems that every time Sam poos his outfit inevitably ends up soaking in the sink in the hope that the stains wont set and it can be worn again.

Most importantly I need a nappy that Sam is comfortable in and that isn’t going to leave me with a grumpy baby or one that needs changing every five minutes, especially when out and about.”

Alice chose to try prefold nappies to start with and her blog talks about how easy they were to use:

“Why they are called prefold I’m not sure because on best description they are like a small really thin duvet that you have to fold and shape and put into the wrap, which is waterproof on the inside and soft fabric on the outside and this part looks more like a conventional nappy”

Day 2 of the real nappy trial is titled ‘Confidence needed’. Alice decides she needs to put as much confidence in the cloth nappies as she does disposibles which constantly fail her. She also writes about the need to educate her hubby!

This great nappy / day pack fits onto the Ergo Performance baby carrier which is the lightweight Ergo. It buckles onto the carrier allowing you to carry all you day to day needs with you.

The performance cargo pack is made of a rugged, durable polyester/cotton blend. The cargo pack attaches to the side buckles on either of the performance carriers, and features a generous main compartment with a side pocket, and a mesh outside pocket.

With a velcro flap, the cargo pack can attach to the carrier‘s waist belt when worn in any position. It can also be used independently with the adjustable and detachable shoulder strap.

This is what a customer at the Natural Nursery had to say about the Ergo Performance Cargo Pack

Great not to have to carry a separate bag and useful to have the option of attaching the shoulder strap to use as a handbag without the carrier.

However, it’s not very big – will fit one or two disposable nappies and some wipes etc but not much space if you are using washables.

So, good for nipping out to the shops and having a “just in case” kit with you but would need more space if you are out and about for the day.

Going Visiting With Your Baby By Elizabeth Pantley, Author of Gentle Baby Care

Babies love new places! There’s so much to investigate and new things to touch. But many people aren’t too happy to have your little one crawling or toddling freely about the house exploring everything in sight. While you think its adorable that Baby found the Tupperware, your host may not think it’s cute that her tidy cabinet has been rearranged by sticky baby hands. If your host has a big heart she’ll let you know that your baby’s exploring is okay. But even then, you run the risk of your baby breaking or losing something.

Bring toys!

The best thing you can do is bring along a bag of toys to seize your child’s attention. You can purchase new items, or dig through your baby’s toy box to put together a collection of forgotten favorites. Avoid bringing loud toys that may annoy others, and bring toys that will hold your baby’s attention for a long time.

Bring your own supplies

Think about things that keep your baby happy at home or in the car, and bring these with you, such as your sling, a favorite blanket, a Boppy pillow, or a special lovey. If you are prepared, then your baby will be more content.

Safety issues

Visits with a mobile baby are tricky, especially if you’re at a home that isn’t childproof. If you want to avoid physically shadowing your baby around the house, bring a few safety tools, such as outlet plugs and a folding baby gate to section off stairways. When you arrive, assess the area and ask if chemicals, medications, or fragile vases can be put away during your visit. Remember that you’re certain to miss some hazards, so keep a close eye on Baby during your entire visit.

Food and eating

Whether your baby is new to solid food or has been eating it for a while, bring along a few favorites. If you don’t bring snacks with you, your baby may not touch the dinner that’s served and may cry for her favorite crackers. In any case, don’t feel you must push your baby to try something new to the point of a temper tantrum. Politely requesting something simple like toast or cheese is perfectly okay and will be welcomed more than a loud and tense test of parent/child wills.

What if you’re breastfeeding and your baby is hungry?

Do what comes naturally: Feed him! Breastfeeding is the most natural way to feed a baby. If your hosts aren’t used to seeing a mother breastfeed, then you’re doing our world a favor by introducing one more person to the beauty of baby feeding. Be thoughtful about other’s sensitivities. This doesn’t mean you need to hide, but your efforts to be discreet are a courtesy for those around you and may help others feel more comfortable about seeing you breastfeeding your baby. Using a sling, blanket or nursing shirt are easy ways to accomplish this.

Changing Diapers

Bring a changing pad; this will protect the surface you’re using. If you don’t have a pad, ask for a towel. Ask where your host prefers that you change the baby, or suggest a location: “Do you mind if I lay the towel on your bed to change the baby?”

Bring along (or ask to use) plastic bags to store messy diapers. Make sure that they are sealed so that they don’t create odors. If you use disposables, put used diapers in a sealed bag and offer to take them out to the trash. People don’t like stinky diapers in their bathroom trash.

Sleeping and napping

If your little one sleeps in a cradle or crib you may want to bring along a portable crib. If you don’t have one, or if you co-sleep at home, this is a time when “anything goes.” If your baby will sleep in your arms, then go ahead and enjoy an in-arms nap. If your baby is flexible, put a blanket on the floor and set up a sleeping nest. Don’t leave Baby alone, since the area probably isn’t childproof.

A great nap solution is to bring your car seat into the house and strap your baby in securely, or fashion a bed from a large box or an empty dresser drawer. Keep your baby close by or check on her frequently.

For co-sleepers, your first order of business is to create a safe sleeping place. Inspect the furniture placement in the bedroom. If you know that pushing the bed against the wall would make the situation safer for your baby, then politely explain to your host. Let her know that you’ll move it back before you leave (and then remember to do so).

Be prepared for anything

Life with a baby is filled with surprises. Take a deep breath, and do your best to keep your baby content….and if things don’t go as well as you’d hoped, remind yourself that “This too shall pass.”

Show your appreciation

If you’ve had an overnight stay, if your host is helpful, or if you made special requests during your stay, remember to send a thank you note that expresses your appreciation.

Symptoms of Teething

Teething can be a very stressful time for parents and their baby – just as you thought things were finally settling down, the pain and shock of teething hits.

Teething usually begins between the ages of four and nine months and most babies will cut their first tooth by one year.

Teething can bring on flushed cheeks, dribbling, irritability and crying. You may also notice that your child is more inclined to chew – on anything from fingers and toys to food – a natural reaction to the changes going on within the gum.

You can help your baby by providing a range of toys to chew on or a natural remedy such as Teetha granules to sooth and calm.

Symptoms of Teething

These can vary depending upon the baby and how old she is when cutting her first tooth. Some babies can show signs of teething from as early as 2 or 3 months but most babies will start teething somewhere between 4 and 9 months.

There is lots of disagreement about the symptoms of teething but you are likely to see some or all of these:

Chewing / Biting

The teething process can cause painful and inflamed gums and it is thought that biting helps to relieve the painful pressure on the gums.

Your baby may chew on their own hands and fingers, your finger or anything else they can get in their mouth.

Some parents find that babies reduce the amount of breastmilk or other food that they take.

Tip – help your baby by providing a range of toys suitable for chewing – the iconic Sophie the Giraffe range is very popular as are wooden teething rings.

Fussiness / Irritability

Many parents find that their just settling into a rhythm baby becomes extra fussy when cutting teeth. This is because the gums are sore and painful as the teeth come through.

You may find that sleep and feeding patterns are changed and you will have to adapt to your baby’s changed rhythm.

Tip – you can help your baby by providing lots of extra support – extra cuddles, perhaps carrying in a sling, providing toys to chew on, amber necklaces, baby massage and natural remedies such as Teetha granules can all help.

Dribbling

One of the first signs of teething is drooling – excess saliva is produced causing a dribbly baby.

This can sometimes cause the skin around the mouth to become sore so it may be necessary to dry the area and apply a cream a couple times a day.

Tip – some parents find that their baby becomes prone to nappy rash when teething – perhaps because the wee is stronger due to the dribbling or perhaps because the stools are looser.

You can help by changing the nappy more frequently, allowing plenty of nappy free time and ensuring your baby is getting plenty to drink.

Sleeplessness

Your baby is experiencing a considerable degree of pain (if you have ever had tooth or ear ache, you know what it is like), so they are likely to find it harder to drop off to sleep.

This can be worse in the night, and babies may wake several times for comfort and help in dealing with the pain.

Tip – if you can, take a nap with your baby during the day so you are feeling more rested.

You may need to help your baby drift off to sleep, perhaps by popping in a sling for day time naps and extra breastfeeds over night.

Your baby may find a massage helpful or natural remedies such as amber necklaces and Teetha can help soothe the whole body, making sleep possible.

Ear pulling / Face Rubbing

Teething and sore gums may cause painful sensations in the cheeks and ears which your baby may relive by pulling their ears or rubbing their cheeks.

Tip – you can help relieve this painful pressure with baby massage. If you don’t have a local baby massage class, there are lots of videos on YouTube demonstrating simple techniques.

This cream works wonders on a sore bottom within a couple of applications. It’s also great to know it has no nasty ingredients, and it smells lovely!

Most babies will suffer from nappy rash as some point but simple techniques to help you keep it to a minimum include:

Regular cleaning of the nappy area
Use of nappy/barrier creams
Plenty of nappy free time

Nappy rash is NOT caused by using washable nappies.

1. Clean the nappy area

Regular, proper cleaning of the nappy area is essential.

Newborns will need changing up to 7 or 8 times during the day, reducing to every 4 hours once they are a little older.

The nappy area must be thoroughly cleaned and dried at every nappy change. Some parents like to use warm water and cotton wool or a reusable cotton wipe, especially for newborns.

Other parents will use a disposable baby wipe, some of which can be flushed away. Disposable baby wipes have the advantage of already containing cleansing agents but parents do need to read the ingredients carefully as some non-organic wipes may contain chemicals that can irritate delicate skin.

An alternative is to use a cleansing cream or baby oil – apply with cotton wool and gently wipe off, making sure all traces of the cream are removed.

Before putting a clean nappy on the baby, ensure that the skin is completely dry.

2. Use a nappy cream

Some parents like to use a nappy change cream or barrier cream, either at every nappy change time or once or twice a day.

Ensure that you choose a natural or organic nappy cream, one that will sooth your baby’s skin without preventing it from breathing.

Always apply creams sparingly and allow to sink in and dry before replacing the nappy.

3. Nappy free time

Babies love to kick around without their nappies on and this is a great way of keeping the nappy area fresh and healthy.

Place the baby on a waterproof changing mat on the floor or the middle of the bed and allow them to kick away. You may like to tickle them, use it as opportunity for a gentle massage or place a baby gym over the baby.

Putting a cloth nappy (a terry square is ideal) under your baby will help you deal with any little accidents.

Safety

Do remember never to leave you baby unattended on a bed or other high place in case they roll and fall off.

If you are worried about your baby’s health, then do seek medical advice – long running nappy rash could be a symptom of an underlying health issue.

Telford and Wrekin Borough Council operate a scheme offering either a £30 cash back on purchases of re-useable nappies or a free 4 week trial of a nappy laundry service.

The scheme receives an annual sign up of around 100 households a year from approximately 1900 births. Each household on the scheme diverts approximately 1 tonne of disposable nappy waste from landfill!

When my son was little he wanted to live in his bee costume, and then his tiger costume. Now he is the grand old age of 8 he still finds time to be a monster or a knight. The Watford Borough Council nappy cashback scheme is designed as a way of rewarding families who use washable re-usable nappies for their children and therefore avoid adding to the mountain of waste created by the use of disposable nappies.

The scheme is joint funded by Watford and Hertfordshire County Council. If you use washable re-usable nappies or join a nappy laundering service you will be reimbursed with a one-off payment of up to £50 per family towards the cost. Children must be under 2 years of age.

And there is no getting away from it – somewhere at the top of your list will be nappies. Choosing which nappies to use for your little one is a big decision – after all, you are likely to be using them for at least two years.

These days, there are a lot of nappies on the market. You can choose from ordinary disposables, eco (environmentally friendlier disposables) and reusable, cloth nappies. When I had my first child. I used mainly eco disposables, as I was quite green-minded but at that time there was not the huge range of reusable nappies on the market that there is right now. But even with eco disposables, nappies can vary widely. The ones I used were 70% degradable, with no chlorine bleach used in the absorbant pulp. (Chlorine is used in most big-brand disposable nappies. However, chlorine can create dioxins, which are hazardous to the environment and even considered to be potentially cancer-causing.

Deciding To Use ‘Real’ Nappies

In actual fact, many, if not most, of the best known disposable nappies contain a plethora of toxic substances you may want to consider avoiding. Unfortunately, these ingredients are not exactly advertised, meaning that many parents are blissfully unaware of the chemicals they are placing next to their babies’ skin.

As recently as a couple of months ago, tests conducted by Greenpeace discovered Tributyl tin (TBT) in Pampers Baby Dry Mini Nappies. TBT is a nasty pollutant that can, according to the report, affect the hormone system of a baby (or anybody else), as well as damaging delicate immune systems. And when you begin to research the substances used to produce the typical disposable nappy, you will discover many other unwelcome ingredients, ideally avoided.

But even eco disposable nappies have to go in the bin. That is why, after reading so many reports of the billions of nappies that end up in landfill every single year, I made the decision to use reusable nappies when my second child came along.

Not As Much Work As You Would Think

Many new parents seem to be put off using reusable nappies because they assume that it is going to be a great deal of work. Surely washing and drying nappies is a lot harder than simply chucking them away? Well, yes, I suppose there is a bit more work. But not an awful lot. Not really. Cloth nappies these days are very much removed from the square terry towelling sort held together with safety pins in years gone by. And don’t forget, in those days washing machines were barely comparable with the modern appliances we have today. Years ago, nappies had to be soaked and sometimes scraped before washing – my own mother had a twin tub that seemed to require a great deal of labour. Nothing like the ‘stuff it all in, add some powder and wait’, which is pretty much all that is required of us today.

Modern Resuable Nappies Fasten Easily And Liners Make Life Easy

You can still buy the old fashioned terry nappies if you choose, but the most popular ‘real’ nappies today are modern styles that do up with velcro, or some other type of fastener, just like the tabs on a disposable nappy. It’s very simple and very easy – no fumbling about with pins while your baby wriggles about all over the mat. Most people use additional liners, which ‘catch’ the solids that can then be flushed away. You can choose from washable liners or biodegradable, flushable liners – we used flushable liners (still discarded, but nowhere near as much waste as a whole nappy. In fact, barely bigger than two or three sheets of loo paper. Using liners definitely makes the washing a whole lot easier, and the nappy will also feel more comfortable for your baby because the liner draws urine through and away from the skin so that your baby still feels dry.

My personal opinion is that, using washable nappies worked out very well for us, without much extra work at all. We washed a load of nappies about once every other day, though probably more often at first. In order to do that you have to make sure you have enough nappies to last. When your baby is very young she will require more frequent changes than as she gets a little older. We had around 15 – 20 nappies in the small size. And as the nappies we were using (Tots Bots Bamboozles) were made of bamboo, which is naturally antibacterial, they didn’t even require any soaking. All we did was to store them in a nappy bucket with a tight lid before washing with ordinary detergent.

It Saves You Money

Choosing reusable nappies will save you quite a bit of money, as long as you stick with them. The initial payout may seem like a lot, but it isn’t, really, when you take into account how many packs of disposable nappies you will require over the course of a year. If you spend £200 on real nappies which last until your child is potty-trained, then you will have saved yourself several hundred pounds. The typical parent might spend around £20-30 per month on disposable nappies, which works out at around £300-£350 per year. Times by two years – that’s £600 - £700 spent on nappies. The savings are obvious.

Choosing The Right Nappies For You

Microfibre, Cotton or Bamboo?

We chose Tots Bots Bamboozles because they are highly absorbant and also very eco friendly – bamboo is a fast growing plant that does not require high use of pesticides. They are also very soft and cute, and you can even buy brightly coloured ones instead of typical off-white. We found these nappies to be excellent, and they barely ever leaked – much less so than any disposable ones we had previously used. The Tots Bots sets we bought came with a polyurethane waterproof outer wrap, but you will require more than one. We actually used Motherease wraps over the top of our Bamboozles, because they fastened more tightly around the legs, making leakage less likely. It is not necessary to buy wraps from the same manufacturer as the nappies you are using – many will mix and match, giving you a wide choice.

The only downside to using bamboo nappies is the drying time. They can take a lot longer to dry than some of the other fast-drying nappies. Sometimes this wasn’t a problem – on a sunny day they will dry well on the line outside. In the winter we dried them on the radiators, but this does mean that they do not dry as softly. Of course, you can use the tumble drier, but this was something I wanted to avoid as driers use excessive amounts of energy, contradicting your efforts of going ‘green’. What you could do is to have more than one type of nappy, so that you do have some fast-drying ones as well.

Cotton and microfibre nappies (especially the latter) have faster drying times than bamboo, but are not quite as absorbant, so you have to decide which is the right nappy for you. We went for the extra absorbancy over drying time, but some parents will choose the opposite.

Conclusion

I am really pleased that I chose to use reusable nappies for my second child. Certainly, if I was to have more children I would not hesitate to do it again. Using real nappies for over two years certainly saved me a fair amount of money, and I know that I have prevented literally hundreds of nappies from ending up in landfill. Going back to the ways of past generations is certainly a step forwards for today’s parents.”

“I think there are a lot of things that if I’d known before going into it the first time, I could have saved myself a world of trouble.

Newborn babies will eat ALL. THE. TIME. The information I read was the typical crap based on formula-fed babies, so when I read that newborns “should nurse every 2-3 hours,” but sometimes every hour and a half, of course I was concerned when my son nursed what seemed like every 45 minutes, for about 45 minutes (Psst, they can nurse over 15 times in 24 hours and it’s NORMAL!)
Making breastfeeding friends is insanely important. What every mom needs is someone to tell her that it’s okay, it’s normal, and they’ve been there, too. When you want to cry because you’re exhausted and your boob-fiend is at it again, having a mom friend who will say, “Oh honey, I’ve so been there. Learn the side-lying feed and relax,” means more than all the pamphlets in the world.
Even when everything is right, it can still hurt. Who winced seeing me say that? But it’s TRUE. Sometimes a teething baby is awkward for a day or two. When I’d vacation from my humid home to my mom’s arid climate, my nipples would split and there wasn’t anything I could do about it, other than apply ointments all day. Sometimes the bad latch from two hours ago, that you fixed, will still feel sore later even when everything is right. If it hurts, GET HELP and make sure everything is okay, but moms should also know that sometimes it isn’t going to be great.
Well-meaning supplementation makes life so much harder. When we talk about not giving bottles or formula, we’re not just on the breast-brigade. Every bottle given to your baby screws up your feeding schedule from your breasts, which can make you sore, lower your supply, cause oversupply/choking at the next feed, and so on. If you HAVE to supplement or pump, then you have to, end of story. But if you don’t? Then skip it because that is sooo much more work that causes even more work and struggles.
Sometimes you’re going to hate it. Yes, it releases chemicals to make moms happy and relaxed. I love that, I do. But frankly, there are times when I just want to say, “LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE!” and don’t want to nurse, don’t want someone needing me, or want to sit down without someone in my lap. Sometimes it’s not a loving act, but one I force myself to do and I spend the whole time tapping my toes, waiting to leap up and do something “more important.” While I do almost always love it, there are definitely times I don’t, but that’s okay.”

“Great Carrier

I’ve ordered this carrier as a replacement for my Eco AngelPack. There was nothing wrong with my existing carrier, but I always wanted an Ergo and can afford it now, but couldn’t then (it is pricey). I chose Ergo performance because I was promised it weighs less than standard ergo and I loved the green colour
I received the package promptly and I have to say that I am delighted with the carrier. It has nothing majorly different from my AngelPack, but it is better in many ways. For example, ergo is all in one piece – you can’t lose a chest strap. It’s easy to pop on and off. And there’s A LOT of extra strap length. Unfortunately my old carrier didn’t have very long straps, so hip carry was not possible.

The booklet was very helpful, explaining how to get baby on back, front or hip. Overall I’m satisfied with it. Rain hood is also nice. Bottom line – it is expensive, but I feel it is comfortable and well made so worth it. Service was very good too.

We know that using real nappies can save you hundreds but I didn’t know that nurseries have a problem using them – when my son was tiny as long as I brought a waterproof nappy bag, a clean nappy and showed them how to use the cloth nappy it was never a problem to ask a creche to change his real nappy.

Have you had any problems with nurseries or childminders only using disposables?

“Surveys suggest you’ll spend over £9,000 on a child’s first 12 months. Nonsense, says Hilary Osborne, you can do it for much less. “

“Last May, ahead of my maternity leave, I wrote about how I’m a bit of a cheapskate, and that I was going to resist all the attempts to part new mums from their cash. One reader remarked that asking an expectant mother for tips on having a cheap baby was similar to asking someone who didn’t yet have a garden to give gardening tips. Few believed my prediction that with careful budgeting I would spend no more than £300 or so. I now realise that perhaps that was naive.

My main nappies have been reusable. Having intended to use a £50 voucher from Haringey council to try a laundry service, I then decided it would be better invested in nappies I could keep. I didn’t start until Wyn was three months old and was conscious that most nurseries won’t use them, so I didn’t want to invest too heavily. Through eBay, scouting out special offers, and nappy swaps I managed to get hold of 16 nappies and all the accessories needed for £105. I’m unsure if this is going to save me money, but I feel better when I look in the bin.

The total cost of using real nappies can be half that of using disposables. Further savings can be achieved by using the same real nappies for your second or third child.

Home washing offers the greatest savings, costs can be as low as £1 a week including the price of detergents and energy. There is no need to soak or pre-wash the nappies, just wash at 60 degrees C. For extra convenience, local nappy laundries offer weekly services that collect used nappies and provide a fresh supply, laundered to the highest standards, for the next seven days all for a cost similar to that of buying disposables.

Sure Start Maternity Grants

A Grant of £500 per each baby is available through the Sure Start Maternity Grant Scheme. Perhaps some of this money could be used to get started with Real Nappies. A Sure Start Maternity Grant is intended to help you pay for the immediate needs of a new-born baby if your income is low. It is paid from the Social Fund as a lump sum, and you do not have to pay it back. It is not limited by a budget and everyone who is entitled will get a payment or grant.

Who can get Sure Start Maternity Grants?

You are eligible for a Sure Start Maternity Grant if you or your partner are getting Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Pension Credit, Working Tax Credit where a disability or severe disability element is included in the award or Child Tax Credit at a rate higher than the family element. “I’m not sure what to do with regards to nappies and our first child is expected soon! I’d always thought that I’d plump for reusable nappies, however, we have recently moved to Kuwait with my husband’s work and he says that due to the way that water is desalinated here, and consumes so much water, it would be more environmentally friendly to use disposables. The eco-friendly disposables on the market are not sold here and even if I stocked up I would largely be reliant on the less ethical brands. I really am in a quandary, please help!”

It seems to have been a while now since I last heard anyone raising this age-old debate. Six years ago, it was all the rage, most likely because the Environment Agency published its controversial report which calculated and compared the environmental footprint of both washable and disposable nappies.

My reaction to the report can be seen here in an article I wrote for this paper’s G2 features section. Why, I asked, had the report not examined the amount of waste sent to landfill that disposable nappies generate? And why, when trying to calculate the embodied energy of washable nappies, did it assume people ironed them?!

In 2008, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs published an updated report (pdf) which drew much more nuanced conclusions. It concluded: “The environmental impacts of using shaped reusable nappies can be higher or lower than using disposables, depending on how they are laundered. The report shows that, in contrast to the use of disposable nappies, it is consumers’ behaviour after purchase that determines most of the impacts from reusable nappies.”

It then listed six ways for users of washable nappies to “reduce their environmental impacts”: line drying outside whenever possible; tumble drying as little as possible; when replacing appliances, choosing more energy efficient appliances (A+ rated machines); not washing above 60°C; washing fuller loads; and reusing nappies on other children.

There was a time when the (previous) government was actively promoting the use of washable nappies with subsidised schemes such as WRAP’s Real Nappy Campaign. In 2007, the then environment minister said this “three-year campaign had succeeded in diverting approximately 23,000 tonnes of biodegradable nappy waste from landfill in England”.

But, beyond answering the opening query about the comparative environmental merits of washable and disposable nappies, I would also be interested to hear if any local schemes are still up and running promoting the use of washable, or laundry-serviced nappies.”

UK parents throw away around 3 billion disposable nappies every year – that is a lot of landfill!

Each one of these nappies will require around one cup of crude oil to make the plastic in the waterproof wrap – all to be thrown away, a massive waste of our natural resources.

A Women’s Environmental Network commissioned study shows that disposable nappies use:

3.5 times as much energy
8 times as much non-renewable raw materials
90 times as much renewable raw materials
2.3 times as much waste water
60 times as much solid waste
up to 30 times as much land

as reusable nappies.

It is believed that it will take up to 500 years for these nappies to decompose (all the while producing dangerous methane gas), which could be a big headache for our grandchildren.

So all in all, washable nappies are the best.

£30 off Real Nappies with Tamworth Borough Council

What sort of nappy do you use?
I didn’t know there was any choice!!

Every year approximately 1400 tonnes of nappy waste are sent to landfill from Tamworth. Nappies make up 4% of the total household waste. It is estimated they will take between 200 and 500 years to decompose. A baby will have approximately 2,000 nappy changes a year which could cost you £800 per child. It takes large amounts of resources including trees, oil and chemicals to produce disposable nappies for the British market.

There is an alternative… Reusable cloth nappies. They are simple and easy to use, washable at 60 degrees and can be tumble dried. They can not only save you money but can also help to protect the environment. They are also on average less expensive than disposables and can be used for more than one child. A cloth nappy system including home laundry can cost from as little as £200. Staffordshire County Council are working with in partnership with local cloth nappy providers to encourage people to use reusable nappies. A financial reward of up to £30 per child is available for using cloth nappies.

The Disana Tie-on is a 100% organic cotton nappy at a great price.

It is knitted from organic cotton in Germany (less nappy miles), so has a soft, stretchy feel meaning it can be adjusted to fit virtually any shape baby.

It will fit even the tiniest of newborns and will then grow with your child until potty training.

Use with the disana brushed cotton liners and or a flushable paper liner.

It is commonly used with the disana wool wrap, but also works well with the Mother Ease Rikki wrap.

Some form of booster will be needed after 2-3 months to add extra absorbency, allowing you to use this nappy all the way through to potty-training.

“I have bought some shaped nappies for the childminders convenience but the disana nappy is the main nappy I use as it drys so quickly. The first couple of times I put it on a squirmy 6mth old was a little fiddly, but now its second nature. 10 nappies for twenty pounds is a fraction of the cost of other nappies. If you find the ties are too fiddly this nappy works very well if you just cut the ties off and use a nappy nippa instead.
