It would make a lovely new baby gift as it contains a birth to potty pocket nappy, 2 inserts, matching wet bag and a guide to reusable nappies.

This reusable nappy consists of a waterproof outer with a “pocket” made of soft fleece. Simply stuff the booster insert into the pocket, adjust the snaps to fit your baby and put on just like a disposable.

Benefits of the Baba + Boo Pocket Nappy

One size/birth to potty pocket nappy – only one set of nappies to buy

Complete with two micro fibre inserts

Simple to use – once stuffed goes on and off like a disposable

Fastens with poppers for a secure fit

Elasticated waist and legs for a leak free nappy

Poppers to the front adjust the size of the nappy to fit from 8lbs to 35lbs

Very quick drying

No need to use a paper or fleece liner

Benefits of the Wet Bag

Waterproof wet bag for reusable nappies on the go

Funky animal prints or bold colours

Zipper fastening top

Hold approx 4/5 nappies

Generous 40 x 35 cm

Can be used after potty training as a swim bag, beach bag etc

Natural Nursery customer Naomi rated the Baba + Boo nappy 5 out of 5 and said:

“The Baba+Boo one size pocket nappy comes with two inserts, so you can use one or both depending on need. The pocket’s opening is narrow, but elasticated so it stretches for easy insertion. Once inside the inserts stay put. The snaps allow for three different sizes and for my 5 month old the small size is great. I haven’t tried using these overnight, but for daytime use they have proved very reliable.”

What a fantastic colourful present they would make too!

Fleece nappy wraps allow a greater airflow than pul based wraps so are ideal for babies with sensitive skin or who are prone to nappy rash.

They can be used during the day or night but it is important that your baby moves around whilst wearing a fleece wrap else compression wicking can occur.

The Eccobots Fleece wraps are made just a few miles away from the Natural Nursery in Devon, we love local products!

Rebecca left this glowing review of them:

“Fantastic wrap. Really good quality fleece. Elastic really good as well – I know it will fit my boy till he potty trains. The service I received was wonderful. I’d recommend this wrap to everyone. Thanks!”

Your wraps will be made in girl, boy or unisex design to order so delivery is a few days longer than normal.

If you have a particular design that you would like, please let us know and we will do our best.

Eight million disposable nappies are thrown away every day in the UK and mostly go to landfill.

Cut your household rubbish by up to half and help the environment by choosing Real Nappies.

Gone are the days of the old terry-towelling nappies, and in their place are a new breed of super-trendy, easy-to-use variety of Real Nappies. Modern, cotton nappies can be used again and again, unlike disposable nappies.

They are real because they are not made from plastic and do not contain chemicals.

They are real because they fit in with your lifestyle and are as simple to use as disposables.

What’s more, there are so many Real benefits to using them.

Why choose Real Nappies?

Save Cash

Real Nappies can cost half that of disposables, saving up to £500 for your first baby. Reuse your cotton nappies for a second baby and save even more money! The cheapest option, even taking into account the cost of washing powder, energy and depreciation of the washing machine, is buying your own real nappies and washing them at home.

If you live in Central Bedfordshire (excluding Luton), Central Bedfordshire Council will give you £25 cashback when you spend over £50 purchasing washable nappies, covers or training pants from any company, or subscribe to a nappy laundry service.

Real Nappies information leaflet (application/pdf; 2997kB)

Real Nappies application form (application/pdf; 81kB)

Health Benefits

Disposable nappies are made of super-absorbent chemicals, paper pulp, plastics and adhesives, while Real Nappies let your childs skin breathe in natural cotton. If you want the best solution, organic cotton and hemp nappies are available at a reasonable cost. Real Nappies also widen your childs hips, therefore making them stronger as they’re growing. Babies using washable nappies tend to potty train 6 months earlier than those in disposables.

Variety

From prefolds to quick-fastening velcro, there are a wide range of Real Nappy types to choose from, so you can select the best style for your baby and your individual circumstances. Speak to your Real Nappy Advisor about the best choice for you and your baby. Convenience: You can choose a routine which suits you, maybe washing every 2-3 days. You can store nappies prior to washing either in a lidded nappy bucket or in a waterproof bag. It is up to you whether you soak or ‘dry-pail’ your nappies. Try both to see what suits you best. Washing at 40-60°C is perfectly adequate to sterilise nappies – there is no need for a boil wash.

Environment

Disposable nappies create huge amounts of waste and can take up to 500 years to rot away in landfill. Real Nappies create less waste and by following these simple tips you can help reduce their environmental impact even more:

only flush liners containing bowel movements

use low temperature detergents

buy more nappies initially and wash full loads

use a biodegradable washing detergent such as Ecover and don’t use fabric softener

look at the label and try washing at a lower temperature

air dry rather than tumble dry where possible

purchase electricity on a green tariff

You can use the cashback voucher for nappies bought at the Natural Nursery.

The Guardian are using the ‘Ask Leo and Lucy‘ column as an experiment in crowd-sourcing a reader’s question, so please let them know your views and experiences on this link and they will join in with some of their own thoughts and reactions as the debate progresses.

“I’m not sure what to do with regards to nappies and our first child is expected soon! I’d always thought that I’d plump for reusable nappies, however, we have recently moved to Kuwait with my husband’s work and he says that due to the way that water is desalinated here, and consumes so much water, it would be more environmentally friendly to use disposables. The eco-friendly disposables on the market are not sold here and even if I stocked up I would largely be reliant on the less ethical brands. I really am in a quandary, please help!”

Claire Shepherd, by email

It seems to have been a while now since I last heard anyone raising this age-old debate. Six years ago, it was all the rage, most likely because the Environment Agency published its controversial report which calculated and compared the environmental footprint of both washable and disposable nappies.

My reaction to the report can be seen here in an article I wrote for this paper’s G2 features section. Why, I asked, had the report not examined the amount of waste sent to landfill that disposable nappies generate? And why, when trying to calculate the embodied energy of washable nappies, did it assume people ironed them?!

In 2008, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs published an updated report (pdf) which drew much more nuanced conclusions. It concluded: “The environmental impacts of using shaped reusable nappies can be higher or lower than using disposables, depending on how they are laundered. The report shows that, in contrast to the use of disposable nappies, it is consumers’ behaviour after purchase that determines most of the impacts from reusable nappies.”

It then listed six ways for users of washable nappies to “reduce their environmental impacts”: line drying outside whenever possible; tumble drying as little as possible; when replacing appliances, choosing more energy efficient appliances (A+ rated machines); not washing above 60°C; washing fuller loads; and reusing nappies on other children.

There was a time when the (previous) government was actively promoting the use of washable nappies with subsidised schemes such as WRAP’s Real Nappy Campaign. In 2007, the then environment minister said this “three-year campaign had succeeded in diverting approximately 23,000 tonnes of biodegradable nappy waste from landfill in England”.

But, beyond answering the opening query about the comparative environmental merits of washable and disposable nappies, I would also be interested to hear if any local schemes are still up and running promoting the use of washable, or laundry-serviced nappies.”

Please join in the debate on the Guardian site here – http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/green-living-blog/2011/jul/21/nappies-diapers-washable-disposable-environment?commentpage=last#end-of-comments or let us know what you think by commenting below.

The Natural Nursery has been compiling a list of Real Nappy Incentive Schemes, there are more to add so please let us know if there are any we have missed.

UK parents throw away around 3 billion disposable nappies every year – that is a lot of landfill!

Each one of these nappies will require around one cup of crude oil to make the plastic in the waterproof wrap – all to be thrown away, a massive waste of our natural resources.

A Women’s Environmental Network commissioned study shows that disposable nappies use:

3.5 times as much energy

8 times as much non-renewable raw materials

90 times as much renewable raw materials

2.3 times as much waste water

60 times as much solid waste

up to 30 times as much land

as reusable nappies.

It is believed that it will take up to 500 years for these nappies to decompose (all the while producing dangerous methane gas), which could be a big headache for our grandchildren.

So all in all, washable nappies are the best.

from http://www.naturalnursery.co.uk/news/cloth-nappies-why-are-they-best.html

1) Dry on the line

Save money and energy costs by drying your reusable nappies on the washing line – if you are lucky enough to get a very sunny day the UV rays will bleach the material giving you glowing white nappies.

2) Save on conditioner

Fabric conditioner coats each fibre of the material that makes up a nappy – this stops them from absorbing any liquid.

3) Quick Fluffy Nappies

For a quick fluff up on cotton nappies pop them in the tumble dryer for a minute every so often.

4) Forget the Boil Wash.

With modern detergents you can get real nappies just as clean at lower temperatures, especially if they have been soaked first.

5) Put the Iron Away

Reusable nappies work best when they are NOT ironed because ironing flattens the fibres and makes them less absorbent.

6) Get a bucket (with a lid)

Some people wet pail (keeping the nappies in the bucket in water) and some dry pail but whichever way you choose you will need a bucket with a lid to store dirty nappies until they are ready to tip into the machine.

7) Use a Mesh

A nappy mesh is a bag that fits inside the bucket to make washing real nappies easier. Just put the whole thing into your washing machine but leave it untied so the nappies can work themselves out as they get clean.
 Tea Tree Oil

A few drops of tea tree oil inside the nappy bucket, or even in the wash will help to neutralise smells and as it is naturally anti bacterial it will help to sterilise the nappies too – you only need a couple of drops!

9) Use a Nappy Liner

Washable or disposable, nappy liners are vital. With fleece ones the poo just falls off down the toilet and if the nappy itself is not wet you can just put in another liner.

10) Reusable wipes

Washable wipes are just as good as disposable ones. Wet them under the tap with warm water before you use them, or soak in chamomile tea for nappy rash.

11) Don’t Dry on the Radiator

Cotton nappies can dry very hard on a radiator – if you have to radiator dry consider bamboo nappies because they stay fluffy.

You can get a free starter pack of Real Nappies which includes 12 pre-fold nappies, 3 wraps and a roll of liners. £30 cash back or £30 towards the cost of a Nappy Laundry Service.

By using real nappies you can save money, (£600+ for your first baby, more for subsequent), you can cover your babies’ bottom with a lovely soft and fluffy alternative to a disposable nappy and you can save the waste which ends up in your wheeled bin.

Here is another one of the great product reviews that we have had for Tots Bots Bamboozle (Size 2):

Well what can I say? These are great fitting and really easy to use. You fold the insert bit (front for boys, or the middle for girls) and pop it on, its aplix fastening so dead easy for Dads, Grandparents and friends to use! Once it’s on you need a waterproof PUL, Fleece or Wool cover.

We use Wool/Fleece over our cloth nappies as they let the nappy ‘breathe’ so it lasts us longer! Bamboo is more absorbent than cotton and has antibacterial properties though I have found it does take longer to dry.

I can see this nappy lasting quite a long time, we only have a few in our stash as we have a variety of everything but they are a winner in this household! They are less than £10 a nappy and most councils offer a reusable nappy incentive so if you are lucky you can get a few and it won’t even cost you a penny!

Remember to go onto our website to see all of the Tot Bots range we have to offer

Here are some answers to questions I get asked by pregnant friends on a regular basis – they are based on my experiences though, and may be glaringly obvious to some people, but they were not to me! Please feel free to add to this list of useful tips in the comments section.

Clothes
Come in sizes according to weight and don’t last very long at all in the beginning. You will need a slightly larger size if you use real nappies. Some babygros have integral gloves that fold back – very useful for babies that want to scratch their faces off. Things that fasten at the front are easier than things that go over heads. All socks are sacrificial; they don’t stay on feet for long so I prefer things with feet for colder weather.
Nappies
Cloth nappies rock and I like the smell of the Weleda nappy cream which is brilliant stuff. It is a good idea to research nappies, and there are some helpful tips on this blog.

www.naturalnurseryblog.co.uk/how-easy-are-cloth-nappies-to-use

www.naturalnurseryblog.co.uk/why-use-cloth-nappies

Toys
My child at 3 month liked noisy things, mirrors and things he could hold with his tiny fingers. Brightly coloured board books are good too. If you buy anything musical remember that you will have to listen to it too.

Feeding
I used a pump to express milk and I pumped in the morning while feeding after the small had triggered off the let down reflex. Thinking milky thoughts of waterfalls made the milk come out faster! My son never took to a bottle but he would use a sippy cup. Pumping was just in case of emergencies. I boiled cups and the pump to sterilise them, it’s not a hassle and I don’t think the sterilising equipment is really necessary, though it may make life a bit easier. I have read that the sterilising solution can increase the risk of thrush.
Sleeping
I had a Moses basket for small but didn’t like it ‘cos I had to peer in to check his breathing. I bought a cot because it seemed to be the thing to do but in the end decided that I am a fan of co-sleeping. There are guidelines for safe co-sleeping that are well worth looking at. Grobags are brilliant and my small sleept much longer when I got one.

Bathing
I think a bath thermometer is vital, what’s warm to me is boiling for the small. We shared the bath and he loved it. You also need a soft sponge and ducks!

I hope some of these hints are useful, I found it daunting and confusing trying to work out what I needed and what was clutter and I hope my tips can help you.
