The Sullivan family have 9 children, from 18 years to 11 months and twins on the way. Their incredible blog is called ‘Larger Family Life’ and it is jammed full of interesting stuff. “One of the main questions we often get as a large family is, “How do you afford it?”. I talk in more detail about our history and how we got to where we are now in our book. We aren’t wealthy by any means but we get by.

I have two boxes like the one in the photo above, all filled with nappies. I only have three different types in there. One for newborns, one for bigger babies and toddlers and a supply of terry squares which are adaptable for all. Every eighteen months or so, normally when a new baby is due, I will go through the supplies and check which nappies are threadbare and beyond padding out with terries or muslins and, accepting they have served their purpose and will use them as cleaning rags before finally throwing them out. I will throw out any wraps which are no longer usable and I will then replenish the stocks of nappies and wraps which will normally last another 12-18 months or so.

As I haven’t thrown out everything and started from scratch it isn’t very costly to do this every year or two and given that these nappies are used every single day for the last eight years I have certainly got my money’s worth from making the switch. My nappy supply top up every year and a half usually costs me no more than £100-£150 which is sufficient for the 2-3 children who are normally using them at a time. If you compare this to having to purchase one pack of disposables per child per week, say at £6.50 on average for the more well known brands, that comes to £19.50 a week. Even if I were to use a cheaper, generic brand at around £3.70 per pack, for example, I would still be spending £11.10 every week. We could be spending between £45 and £78 on nappies each month bringing the cost to £810 – £1404 every eighteen months, a lot more than the £100 – £150 I spend on them.

When the twins arrive this figure would rise as there would be four in nappies full-time (with one using them at night only, but I’m not including that in the figures). That makes it around £15 – £26 per week on disposables. That is a lot of money and I haven’t even included the cost of wipes either which can easily add another five or ten pounds a week.”

Another way to save money on cloth nappies is with a local council incentive. There are many schemes around the country that give you money back when you buy reusable nappies or free trials. Check out the list on the Natural Nursery to see if your council is involved.

Flip Reusable Nappies – So easy to use!

Flip washable nappies are very easy to use and consist of a waterproof outer layer and an absorbent inner.

You can choose whether to use a stay-dry insert, an organic cotton insert or a disposable insert.

If you have organic cotton inserts, wash them several times to ensure they are fully absorbent.

To use the Flip Nappy System

FLIP the used insert into your nappy bucket
REPLACE the insert with a clean one
REUSE the cover

First – adjust the nappy cover to the size required:

Organic cotton insert: can be folded one way for a newborn and the other way to make a longer pad for older baby.

Stay-dry insert: follow the embroidered folding lines on the insert:

Fit the insert under the flaps at the back and front of the cover. The flaps will hold the insert securely in place.

If you are using organic cotton inserts, you may like to use a paper liner, most parents don’t need to with the stay-dry inserts.

Put the nappy on your baby just as you would a disposable nappy, checking the legs openings and waist to ensure a good fit.

When you are ready to change your baby, toss the used insert into your nappy bucket (you can flick any solids straight down the loo).

Wipe out the nappy cover and pop in a new insert before replacing on your baby.

You can reuse the nappy cover up to 5 times before washing.

Most babies will suffer from nappy rash as some point but simple techniques to help you keep it to a minimum include:

Regular cleaning of the nappy area
Use of nappy/barrier creams
Plenty of nappy free time

Nappy rash is NOT caused by using washable nappies.

1. Clean the nappy area

Regular, proper cleaning of the nappy area is essential.

Newborns will need changing up to 7 or 8 times during the day, reducing to every 4 hours once they are a little older.

The nappy area must be thoroughly cleaned and dried at every nappy change. Some parents like to use warm water and cotton wool or a reusable cotton wipe, especially for newborns.

Other parents will use a disposable baby wipe, some of which can be flushed away. Disposable baby wipes have the advantage of already containing cleansing agents but parents do need to read the ingredients carefully as some non-organic wipes may contain chemicals that can irritate delicate skin.

An alternative is to use a cleansing cream or baby oil – apply with cotton wool and gently wipe off, making sure all traces of the cream are removed.

Before putting a clean nappy on the baby, ensure that the skin is completely dry.

2. Use a nappy cream

Some parents like to use a nappy change cream or barrier cream, either at every nappy change time or once or twice a day.

Ensure that you choose a natural or organic nappy cream, one that will sooth your baby’s skin without preventing it from breathing.

Always apply creams sparingly and allow to sink in and dry before replacing the nappy.

3. Nappy free time

Babies love to kick around without their nappies on and this is a great way of keeping the nappy area fresh and healthy.

Place the baby on a waterproof changing mat on the floor or the middle of the bed and allow them to kick away. You may like to tickle them, use it as opportunity for a gentle massage or place a baby gym over the baby.

Putting a cloth nappy (a terry square is ideal) under your baby will help you deal with any little accidents.

Safety

Do remember never to leave you baby unattended on a bed or other high place in case they roll and fall off.

If you are worried about your baby’s health, then do seek medical advice – long running nappy rash could be a symptom of an underlying health issue.

“When you have your first baby there is a lot to think about, in particular all the items you will require to care for your baby during those first months and the early years. And there is no getting away from it – somewhere at the top of your list will be nappies. Choosing which nappies to use for your little one is a big decision – after all, you are likely to be using them for at least two years.

These days, there are a lot of nappies on the market. You can choose from ordinary disposables, eco (environmentally friendlier disposables) and reusable, cloth nappies. When I had my first child. I used mainly eco disposables, as I was quite green-minded but at that time there was not the huge range of reusable nappies on the market that there is right now. But even with eco disposables, nappies can vary widely. The ones I used were 70% degradable, with no chlorine bleach used in the absorbant pulp. (Chlorine is used in most big-brand disposable nappies. However, chlorine can create dioxins, which are hazardous to the environment and even considered to be potentially cancer-causing.

Deciding To Use ‘Real’ Nappies

In actual fact, many, if not most, of the best known disposable nappies contain a plethora of toxic substances you may want to consider avoiding. Unfortunately, these ingredients are not exactly advertised, meaning that many parents are blissfully unaware of the chemicals they are placing next to their babies’ skin.

As recently as a couple of months ago, tests conducted by Greenpeace discovered Tributyl tin (TBT) in Pampers Baby Dry Mini Nappies. TBT is a nasty pollutant that can, according to the report, affect the hormone system of a baby (or anybody else), as well as damaging delicate immune systems. And when you begin to research the substances used to produce the typical disposable nappy, you will discover many other unwelcome ingredients, ideally avoided.

But even eco disposable nappies have to go in the bin. That is why, after reading so many reports of the billions of nappies that end up in landfill every single year, I made the decision to use reusable nappies when my second child came along.

Not As Much Work As You Would Think

Many new parents seem to be put off using reusable nappies because they assume that it is going to be a great deal of work. Surely washing and drying nappies is a lot harder than simply chucking them away? Well, yes, I suppose there is a bit more work. But not an awful lot. Not really. Cloth nappies these days are very much removed from the square terry towelling sort held together with safety pins in years gone by. And don’t forget, in those days washing machines were barely comparable with the modern appliances we have today. Years ago, nappies had to be soaked and sometimes scraped before washing – my own mother had a twin tub that seemed to require a great deal of labour. Nothing like the ‘stuff it all in, add some powder and wait’, which is pretty much all that is required of us today.

Modern Resuable Nappies Fasten Easily And Liners Make Life Easy

You can still buy the old fashioned terry nappies if you choose, but the most popular ‘real’ nappies today are modern styles that do up with velcro, or some other type of fastener, just like the tabs on a disposable nappy. It’s very simple and very easy – no fumbling about with pins while your baby wriggles about all over the mat. Most people use additional liners, which ‘catch’ the solids that can then be flushed away. You can choose from washable liners or biodegradable, flushable liners – we used flushable liners (still discarded, but nowhere near as much waste as a whole nappy. In fact, barely bigger than two or three sheets of loo paper. Using liners definitely makes the washing a whole lot easier, and the nappy will also feel more comfortable for your baby because the liner draws urine through and away from the skin so that your baby still feels dry.

My personal opinion is that, using washable nappies worked out very well for us, without much extra work at all. We washed a load of nappies about once every other day, though probably more often at first. In order to do that you have to make sure you have enough nappies to last. When your baby is very young she will require more frequent changes than as she gets a little older. We had around 15 – 20 nappies in the small size. And as the nappies we were using (Tots Bots Bamboozles) were made of bamboo, which is naturally antibacterial, they didn’t even require any soaking. All we did was to store them in a nappy bucket with a tight lid before washing with ordinary detergent.

It Saves You Money

Choosing reusable nappies will save you quite a bit of money, as long as you stick with them. The initial payout may seem like a lot, but it isn’t, really, when you take into account how many packs of disposable nappies you will require over the course of a year. If you spend £200 on real nappies which last until your child is potty-trained, then you will have saved yourself several hundred pounds. The typical parent might spend around £20-30 per month on disposable nappies, which works out at around £300-£350 per year. Times by two years – that’s £600 - £700 spent on nappies. The savings are obvious.

Choosing The Right Nappies For You

Microfibre, Cotton or Bamboo?

We chose Tots Bots Bamboozles because they are highly absorbant and also very eco friendly – bamboo is a fast growing plant that does not require high use of pesticides. They are also very soft and cute, and you can even buy brightly coloured ones instead of typical off-white. We found these nappies to be excellent, and they barely ever leaked – much less so than any disposable ones we had previously used. The Tots Bots sets we bought came with a polyurethane waterproof outer wrap, but you will require more than one. We actually used Motherease wraps over the top of our Bamboozles, because they fastened more tightly around the legs, making leakage less likely. It is not necessary to buy wraps from the same manufacturer as the nappies you are using – many will mix and match, giving you a wide choice.

The only downside to using bamboo nappies is the drying time. They can take a lot longer to dry than some of the other fast-drying nappies. Sometimes this wasn’t a problem – on a sunny day they will dry well on the line outside. In the winter we dried them on the radiators, but this does mean that they do not dry as softly. Of course, you can use the tumble drier, but this was something I wanted to avoid as driers use excessive amounts of energy, contradicting your efforts of going ‘green’. What you could do is to have more than one type of nappy, so that you do have some fast-drying ones as well.

Cotton and microfibre nappies (especially the latter) have faster drying times than bamboo, but are not quite as absorbant, so you have to decide which is the right nappy for you. We went for the extra absorbancy over drying time, but some parents will choose the opposite.

Conclusion

I am really pleased that I chose to use reusable nappies for my second child. Certainly, if I was to have more children I would not hesitate to do it again. Using real nappies for over two years certainly saved me a fair amount of money, and I know that I have prevented literally hundreds of nappies from ending up in landfill. Going back to the ways of past generations is certainly a step forwards for today’s parents.”

This Fluffy Friday competition from the Natural Nursery is for a one size BumGenius Nappy.

Real easy to use

There’s not a safety pin in sight with real nappies, so they’re simple to use. They come in lots of modern and funky styles that fasten easily with poppers, Velcro or nifty little plastic grips so that the nappy fits your baby snugly. A biodegradable liner, that keeps baby dry, goes inside the nappy and can be easily flushed away. To prevent leaks – most real nappies are covered with a breathable waterproof cover available in colourful designs.

The total cost of using real nappies can be half that of using disposables. Further savings can be achieved by using the same real nappies for your second or third child.

Sure Start Maternity Grants

A Grant of £500 per each baby is available through the Sure Start Maternity Grant Scheme. Perhaps some of this money could be used to get started with Real Nappies. A Sure Start Maternity Grant is intended to help you pay for the immediate needs of a new-born baby if your income is low. It is paid from the Social Fund as a lump sum, and you do not have to pay it back. It is not limited by a budget and everyone who is entitled will get a payment or grant.

Who can get Sure Start Maternity Grants?

You are eligible for a Sure Start Maternity Grant if you or your partner are getting Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Pension Credit, Working Tax Credit where a disability or severe disability element is included in the award or Child Tax Credit at a rate higher than the family element. We had a lovely day in Heavitree, Exeter yesterday, enjoying the sun and the festive wedding atmosphere and talking to lots of parents and parents-to-be about reusable nappies.

I love getting out to these sorts of events – people can be so surprised to see what modern cloth nappies look like and just how easy they are to use.

Our next event will be Wednesday, 11th May at the Mint Methodist Church, where you can see a range of washable nappies and baby slings, from 10.30 to 12.30 and chat to parents who are already using cloth nappies.

Wonderoos V2 Pocket Nappy

When I received these nappies, I could not believe just how soft they are. I am totally new to cloth nappies and found these so easy to use. My daughter is a small 1 year old and these fit her perfectly. We did initially have a few leaks but that was down to not having the height of the nappy adjusted properly.

They also dry surprisingly quickly, as do the microfiber inserts, but the bamboo booster does take quite a bit longer to dry. I have used these at night, with the bamboo booster and it works really well.

I was also surprised at how well they washed. My little girl had a bad tummy on the second day we used the nappies and we had no leaks and no stains on the nappies after they had been washed.

I love these nappies so much, I will be buying some more.

Itti Bitti D’lish Snap In One Nappy and Booster Set

We love Itti Bitti nappies in our house!!

These are by far the trimmest cloth nappies on the market. They have a clever snap in set of soakers that dry fairly quickly and the outside can be reused if you have spare sets of soakers!

These look great too! You just cant help but stroke the lovely minkee outer! These are also my partners favourite nappy… he ALWAYS reaches for them first!

We know how important it is to get more families using washable nappies (even part-time) if as a country we are to meet our targets for reduction in waste and landfill.

Now you have the chance to encourage your local MP to take reusable nappies seriously – an Early Day Motion (EDM) has been tabled by MP Austin Mitchell.

An EDM is an opportunity to gather support from other MPS and generally make them aware of an issue.

We have a another lovely customer review that we would like to share with you for Tots Bots Cotton Nappies:

These are the staple nappy in my stash. They are consistently reliable, (I have never had a leak with these and a Motherease wrap even despite my boy’s several a day breastfed poos!), well fitting, absorbent and a reasonable price.

They are cute too, giving him a bit of ‘fairy baby’ bum whilst still being one of his fairly trim nappies. I started with just a couple of these amongst my stash but now they are my most used nappy and my husband’s favourite. A must buy!

I LOVE my wonderoos, they were the first cloth nappies I ever had and I’m so glad that I chose them because they are so simple and easy to use. I brought the 15 piece starter set and loved the reusable baby wipes that I got in the pack as I had never heard of them before but they work so well with washable nappies.

I recommend them to everyone I know and love to see the rainbow of colours on my washing line when they are drying.

Washing your wonderoos reusable nappies in 6 easy steps

Washing the Wonderoos reusable nappies is super easy.

Remove the Wonderoos and put it to one side. Clean your baby and put a fresh nappy on.
If the reusable nappy is soiled, hold it (waterproof side up) over the toilet and stretch the fleece. Most of the solids will drop into the toilet. If need be, hold the nappy by one corner tightly and flush the toilet to remove the rest of the solids.
Shake the insert out of the reusable nappy and into your nappy bucket. Then drop in the nappy too. (If you wish, you can give them a quick rinse beforehand.)
On wash day, rinse the nappies in your machine to remove soiling and urine. Wash and rinse using a 40C cycle. Using half the recommended amount of non-biological detergent is sufficient.
Hang your Wonderoos reusable nappies outside or inside in a warm place. They will be dry in a few hours. You can tumble dry Wonderoos on a low heat setting. To ensure your nappies last as long as possible, avoid tumble drying on a regular basis. Avoid drying your nappies directly on the radiator.

A few more tips:

Only use non-biological washing powder. Make sure it doesn’t contain chlorine bleach.
Washing your reusable nappies at 40C is sufficient. If your baby has diarrhoea or nappy rash, wash them at 60C to ensure all bacteria are killed off.
You can wash your Wonderoos set at any height setting to save time, no need to undo all the poppers.
Don’t use fabric softener, it leaves residue on the fabric which will affect your nappy’s absorbency.
Wash your reusable nappies at least once before using. Hemp boosters should be washed at least 3 times before using. It will take up to 8 washes and possibly one tumble dry for them to reach their maximum absorbency.

Wonderoos are reliable reusable nappies for babies of different ages and shapes. Here are few things to consider if leaks do occur.

If the leak happens shortly after the nappy change, the issue is most likely due to the fit. Run your finder around the leg opening of the Wonderoos reusable nappies. It should be snug but not too tight. You may need to change the size setting to the next size up.

If the leaks occurs after a couple of hours it is likely to be due to not being absorbent enough. Check the inserts: if they are soaking wet you need to use an additional nappy insert or change the reusable nappies more often.

Check that baby’s clothing is not too tight and pressing against the nappy causing ‘wicking’ (drawing up liquid like a candle-wick).

Your reusable nappies absorbency might have been reduced by improper washing, use of nappy cream, fabric softener. There might be a build up of detergent in the fibres of the nappies. Try soaking the nappies with bicarbonate soda or white vinegar and washing them in the washing machine at 60C.

If you’re experiencing leaks with a newborn while using the small insert, you could try using the large one instead. You will need to fold the insert over at the front a little to get it to fit into the nappy on its smallest setting.

Some parents worry that the fleece sticks out at the legs and waist of the Wonderoos reusable nappies and that this might cause leaks. Actually this design ensures your baby’s comfort and avoids leaving red marks on the skin. The fleece is not absorbent and will not draw up liquid so will not cause the nappies to leak. If they do leak at the back or leg it is most likely due to the inserts getting too wet. Change baby’s nappy more frequently or use a booster.

Once you have adjusted the Wonderoos reusable nappy size to fit your child the best, it’s time to add the nappy insert.

The nappy insert is the absorbent part of the nappy. It is sandwiched between a fleece layer which draws the moisture away from your baby’s skin and a waterproof layer. The Wonderoos are sold with a special insert, the Wonder-full birth-to-potty inserts. They are especially designed to fit this pocket nappy, maximise absorbency while avoiding the bulky nappy effect.

When you have adjusted the nappy height to the appropriate size for your baby add the inserts. Slide the nappy insert into the pocket of the nappy. The narrowest end of the insert should be towards the front. Make sure that the insert is positioned so that it is up to the front of the nappy and check it lies flat inside the pocket.

For a newborn or a small baby, use the small insert. If your baby needs a more absorbent nappy, (babies vary in their wetting habits) try using the large insert instead. You might need to fold over the front of the insert.

When the Wonderoos nappy is on the medium or large setting you can use the larger insert on its own or with the smaller one to boost absorbency. Use the poppers to fasten the two inserts together. This makes for a very absorbent nappy.

Lie baby on the open nappy with the wings at the back. Pull the front of the nappy up over baby’s tummy and fit into the legs. Fasten both waist poppers on each wing of the nappy.

The fleece lining should stick out slightly at the back of the nappy to increase baby’s comfort but make sure that the absorbent insert is completely inside the nappy to prevent leaks.

Run your fingers around the inside of the legs of the Wonderoos nappies. It should feel snug but not tight. The leg cuffs are designed to give a close comfortable fit at the thigh.

For a newborn waist setting the wing can be overlapped Select a snug but comfortable waist setting for your baby – you should be able to easily run your finger inside the waist of the nappy.

The Wonderoos nappies are made to suit most babies from birth to toddler (approx. 8-35lb / 3.6-15.9kg). They come with two rows of poppers so that the nappy can be adjusted in width and height to suit your baby growth. Once you have bought your nappies and washed them once, the next thing to do is adjust the size of the nappy to suit your baby. Adjusting your Wonderoos nappies to fit your baby is very simple by following these simple steps

You will see on the front of the nappy is a horizontal row of poppers to adjust the waist (1) and two vertical sets of poppers to adjust the height of the nappy according to your baby’s size(2).

To adjust the cloth nappy to the smallest size: Fold the front of the nappy down and fasten popper “1″ to popper “S” on both sides of the nappy. The nappy should look like image 1 and 2 on the left.

To adjust the cloth nappy to the Medium size: For the Medium size setting, fasten popper “1″ to popper “M”. This is shown in photo 3 on the left.

To adjust the cloth nappy to the Large size: To use Wonderoos on their largest size simply leave the height adjustment poppers unfastened as shown in this third image.

Once your reusable nappies are adjusted to the right size, there is no need to undo the poppers to wash them. They can be washed as is until your baby has grown and more be more comfortable with the next setting up.

As all one-size nappies, the Wonderoos reusable nappies are designed to suit most children up to potty training. In the event that your toddler has outgrown his nappies, keep them handy. Wonderoos is said to be working on an extender to suit older children.

Q: How many Wonderoos reusable nappies do I need?

We recommend buying a set of reusable nappies between 15-20, depending on how often you wash them. The less cloth nappies you buy the more often you will need to wash them. To use the Wonderoos nappies full time, we recommend around 18 Wonderoos nappies. At Natural Nursery, they are sold with boosters so you don’t need to worry about that.

Q: What else do I need?

A: The fleece chosen for the Wonderoos nappies will let you slide the poo in the toilet. Flushable nappy liners aren’t really needed but can make nappy changes easier, especially for breastfeeding babies. You will need a container to keep the soiled nappies until the next wash. Washable wipes can be washed along with the nappies and represent big savings, compared to disposables.

Q: How often should I change baby’s Wonderoos?

A: As with all nappies, Wonderoos should be changed when soiled or every 3-4 hours during the day time. Wonderoos should be washed after every use.

Q: Are Wonderoos suitable for night time use?

A: Yes, most babies can wear Wonderoos real nappies at night time. If your baby sleeps through the night their night nappy will need to last around 12 hours without leaks rather than 3-4 hours in the day time. To add additional absorbency to the nappy without making it too bulky, an extra nappy booster can be pleased underneath the usual inserts. We recommend buying 3 or 4 boosters.

Q: What nappy creams should I use?

A: Babies wearing reusable nappies don’t need nappy cream regularly. However if your baby has a nappy rash you can use a non-greasy cream such as Green Baby Nappy Balm will soothe the skin. Greasy nappy creams will stick to the nappy lining causing leaks and permanent damage.

Q: How long will Wonderoos last?
A: Hip Hip Baby! manufacture Wonderoos using highly durable fabrics. They should last through one baby’s time in nappies and may well last for another baby if properly cared for. They are made with popper fastening rather than velcro to keep the nappy from suffering excess wear and tear during washing.

Reusable nappies

With so many reusable nappies to choose from, it can be difficult to decide which ones to buy for your baby. To decide which reusable nappies will suit your baby most, you need to think about how your will be using them. Answering these simple five questions will help you get started.

About your baby: Are you buying the cloth nappies while you’re pregnant? Are you planning to use them from birth? If not, how old is your baby? Is your baby chubby or slim? Is your child a heavy wetter?

Who is caring for the baby? Will other people be changing your baby’s nappies? Is he looked after by grand-parents, a child minder or nursery workers? (If other people will be looking after him, you want something simple)

How will you wash the nappies? Do you have space to store the wet nappies? Where will you be drying the nappies? (If you’re short of space, quick drying reusable nappies are a good option)

Will you have more than one child in reusable nappies at one time? In this case, one-size reusable nappies are preferable so you have one pack of nappies for both children). Are you planning to have more children. Reusable nappies can easily be passed down to younger siblings making them an even better investment.
