We have had a fantastic review of the GEN-Y Universal Nappy Wrap from Jody:

“I LOVE these wraps!

I was a firm pocket user but was always quite wary of leaving them on too long and getting leaks, we tried flips but they were boring looking so someone suggested these! they are fantastic and eventually I converted to just these and some fitteds and pre-folds.

They are lovely to look at, fantastic quality, bombproof with an inner gusset, can be used over anything and I love that the rise adjustment is hidden and not on the front of the nappy.

But be warned the main con to these is that they are addictive!”

There is currently free postage on them at the Natural Nursery too!

“The aim of this blog is to share ‘sustainable baby raising’ knowledge I’ve learned since becoming a mum. The information I’ve found is all over the place, and I thought it would be nice to put it all in one place to make things a little bit easier for others starting out on the same path.

Oh, and where did the name come from? Since birth our little one has reminded us of a baby bird – the way she opens and closes her mouth just like a baby bird when she’s hungry. From baby bird to little chicken, the nickname has stuck. And we try to bring up our little chicken in the most sustainable or green way we can, so there it is, littlegreenchicken!”

She reviews the BumGenius pocket nappy, which is one of the best selling real nappies at the Natural Nursery in this post : http://littlegreenchicken.wordpress.com/tag/cloth-nappies-2/

“The 4.0 comes with two inserts, so you can add extra absorbancy as your baby needs it. So far we have only used one and it’s been fine. You can just throw the nappy in the wash (after removing it from your baby) and during washing the insert makes it way out of the nappy. After drying all you need to do is stuff the insert back in and away you go. So all in all a good nappy and I can’t see how any day care provider would have a problem with using it, super simple to put on and a fairly leak proof option.”

I didn’t know there was any choice!!

Every year approximately 1400 tonnes of nappy waste are sent to landfill from Tamworth. Nappies make up 4% of the total household waste. It is estimated they will take between 200 and 500 years to decompose. A baby will have approximately 2,000 nappy changes a year which could cost you £800 per child. It takes large amounts of resources including trees, oil and chemicals to produce disposable nappies for the British market.

There is an alternative… Reusable cloth nappies. They are simple and easy to use, washable at 60 degrees and can be tumble dried. They can not only save you money but can also help to protect the environment. They are also on average less expensive than disposables and can be used for more than one child. A cloth nappy system including home laundry can cost from as little as £200. Staffordshire County Council are working with in partnership with local cloth nappy providers to encourage people to use reusable nappies. A financial reward of up to £30 per child is available for using cloth nappies.

For further information please go to: www.staffordshire.gov.uk/environment/rubbishwasteandrecycling/nappies

If you live in a different area there might be a nappy incentive for you too! There is a list of councils and groups that offer money off or free trials at the Natural Nursery who can also help you with any paperwork you need to claim money back for nappies.

There are many reasons to use real nappies including:

are easy to use

save you money

are easy to wash

come in lots of styles and designs

can help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

Combat climate change with real nappies

Using real nappies can mean significant gains for the environment both in reduced greenhouse gases and household waste sent to landfill or incineration.

The UK currently throws away around 3 billion disposable nappies every year. They are estimated to weigh 690,000 tonnes most of which are landfilled where they generate methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

For each baby born, it costs approximately £610 in disposable nappies from birth to potty, if a parent used real nappies it would cost around £185 giving a saving of about £425 per baby. In Wolverhampton there are in the region of 3,500 babies born per year therefore almost £1.5m is wasted on disposable nappies.

Incentive scheme

Wolverhampton City Council run a scheme to encourage you to use re-usable nappies:

£30 cash back on production of an original receipt, to prove that you have purchased real nappies. (Minimum purchase of £30 required per child).

Real nappy facts

Reduced waste

Parents using real nappies are able to reduce their waste. This is according to an Environment Agency report that looked at the environmental impacts of both real nappies and disposables.

Global warming impact

If you follow the Real Nappy Campaigns top ten tips your global warming impact would be less than when using disposable nappies.

Energy use

Parents are recommended to wash soiled nappies in full loads at 60C using low energy rated washing machines, allowing them to dry naturally wherever possible. Washable nappies do not need to be soaked prior to washing and do not need ironing.

Cost

Home laundered nappies could save parents up to £500 on the cost of keeping a baby in nappies.

Waste

Nearly three billion disposable nappies are thrown away in the UK every year creating over 690,000 tons of nappy waste.

Real nappies are really easy to use and can save you money. And if you need yet another reason to give them a go, how about this…

…we’ll even pay to get you started!

The Cumbria Real Nappy Campaign has one aim, and that’s to encourage Cumbrian’s to try real nappies. We understand that everybody and every baby is different, what’s right for one person might not be right for another. We just want everybody to give them a go. We think you might be pleasantly surprised at how good real nappies are.

And we’re even willing to put our money where our mouth is. If you sign up to take part in the campaign we’ll give you a voucher to the value of £30 (for a first time applicant with one child) with a minimum spend of £45 when redeemed, or a £45 voucher (for a first time applicant with twins) with a minimum spend of £67.50 when redeemed. These vouchers can be redeemed at most Cumbrian real nappy retailers (a full list of participating retailers can be viewed on this website).

You will only be eligible for a voucher if you meet ALL of the following criteria:

You are a Cumbrian resident (i.e. your main home is in Cumbria)

You are pregnant OR you have a child (or twins) under 6 months old

You have NOT previously applied for a voucher

Once you have applied for a real nappy voucher, you will not be eligible for further vouchers.

PARENTS can find out about the benefits of using cloth nappies at a roadshow in Whitby next Friday (20 May).

Scarborough Borough Council and real nappy guru Jody Smith will be showing parents how switching to cloth nappies can save them some money and help the environment to celebrate Real Nappy Week which runs from 16 to 20 May.

The roadshow will be visiting New Quay Road on Friday 20 May from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.

Donna Gaddass, recycling education officer for Scarborough Borough Council said: “Real nappies are great for the environment and great for your pocket too. “We are pleased to be working with Jody Smith to show parents and parents to be just how fantastic modern cloth nappies are.

“Also courtesy of Fill your Pants we will be offering people who stop by, free entry into our prize draw to win a real nappy trial kit.”

Using cloth nappies rather than disposables helps to reduce waste, and can save parents more than £500 and using disposable nappies can cost up to £732 by the time a baby is potty trained, with 6,000 nappies going to landfill. In comparison, a baby will only need 25 to 30 real nappies, which will cost as little as £185 including washing.

Cloth nappies can be washed at 60 degrees and come in a range of designs. New and expectant mums will have the opportunity to speak to a real nappy expert and see the whole range of real nappies which are available for babies of all shapes and sizes.

Wyre Forest council hoping for a nappy ending

12:10pm Tuesday 10th May 2011

To celebrate Real Nappy Week, Wyre Forest District Council, together with Worcestershire County Council and Honeybee’s Natural Nursery Store, is hosting a Free Real Nappy Picnic and Family Fun Day.

The event takes place at Worcester Woods Country Park, Worcester on Saturday, May 21, from 11am to 1pm. Real Nappy Week runs from next Monday until May 21.

Parents and parents-to-be can find out all they need to know about real nappies.

The event starts with the Real Nappy Picnic, where there will be changing demonstrations, a real nappy fashion show, advice and information from families already using real nappies as well as local children’s services information such as from the National Childbirth Trust, Children’s Centres and Family Information Service.

There is also a competition to win a full set or day set of real nappies, a free goodie bag to the first 50 visitors and baby massage demonstrations and buggy fit trial.

Conservative councillor Nathan Desmond, Wyre Forest District Council’s cabinet member for resources said: “This is a really helpful event because the issue of disposable nappies going to landfill is significant.

“Over 3 billion disposable nappies are thrown away every year in the UK, 90 per cent of which are sent to landfill. One baby will use about 4,000 nappies between birth and potty training.”

To demonstrate that, Jo Duffield, Wyre Forest District Council’s waste minimisation officer, built a “nappy mountain”, which represented the amount of rubbish just one baby will produce solely from nappy waste.

Ms Duffield said: “There are 52 bags in the nappy mountain to represent a year’s worth of waste for one child whilst the alternative is 20 real nappies that would last the same child from birth until potty-training.

“I have two children in real nappies and find them so easy and convenient to use. Even our childminder is happy to use them. There’s a large amount of money to be saved with using real nappies, too, with savings between £500 and £1,500, depending on which system is used.”

Parents can find out more from the waste prevention website, letswasteless.com or Wyre Forest District Council’s webpage, wyreforestdc.gov.uk/realnappies

http://www.kidderminstershuttle.co.uk/news/9016278.Wyre_Forest_council_hoping_for_a_nappy_ending/

If you don’t live near but are interested in real nappies check the every growing list of real nappy incentives at www.naturalnursery.co.uk and for more information there is a brilliant reusable nappy advice page – www.naturalnursery.co.uk/reusable-nappies-advice.html

This is a US report but the rising living costs here must be leading to similar hard decsions to be made by parents – http://manhattan.ny1.com/content/ny1_living/health/136289/high-cost-of-diapers-forces-some-parents-into-risky-practices?r=8793973370

“A recent study shows one in three mothers across the country have to cut back on regular household necessities to cover the cost of diapers.”

“And there is an obvious medical impact. Two of the most common health problems resulting from not changing dirty diapers: diaper rash and fussy babies.”

Switching to reusable nappies could help to cut the weekly shopping bill as well as reducing your household waste.

The Wonderoo Pocket Nappy was kindly tested for us by one of our panel of parent product testers, Claire and her 14 week old baby.

Here’s what Claire had to say:

Everything about the Wonderoo nappy is soft and squishy – the Minky wrap, the bamboo and microterry inserts, right down to the elastic around the legs. That alone made me love this nappy from the start.

As Cecilie is only 14 weeks old, and not the chunkiest of babies, I have found that so many of the pocket nappies that I’ve used are a bit bulky, particularly when folding the regular inserts. The Wonderoo’s Bamboo insert somehow seems to fit the nappy no matter what size setting you have it on. The smaller microterry insert feels thicker (but strangely lighter) than others I have tried and is slightly shaped so doesn’t create a huge wedge in between the legs. I didn’t try both inserts together, that would have been too much cloth for a little baby. Using only one of the inserts at a time, the nappy has only leaked once in the few weeks we’ve been using it – and that was after one of those ‘explosive’ moments – quite forgivable under the circumstances.

I liked the single line of poppers rather than the double row you tend to see on a lot of Birth To Potty nappies, it made putting on a bit easier, although, I did find that the single row ‘pulled’ and this made the nappy try to unfold itself from the smaller sized setting that it had been set on. What is great, is the ability to overlap the poppers so the nappy can be secured on even the smallest of tummies.

As for washing – the bamboo insert takes ages to dry if just left on a clothes horse (not line drying weather yet), but I guess that’s just testament to how absorbent it is. The minky and the microterry insert however dry in no time. The biggest bonus is that the nappy appears to be stain resistant, so no marks left after a wash.

All-in-all, this nappy looks good, feels so soft, fits great and most of all holds it all in. I love it, definitely my favourite nappy in our collection.

Claire and Cecilie Harris

In fact Claire liked this nappy so much – she ordered more!

You can buy the Wonderoo Nappy from our webshop, currently priced at £12.36 with 25% off the RRP.

I love my itti bitti nappies! The first thing I love about them is the velour outer and the pretty colours. They don’t look like nappies, more like plush pants and they are sooo soft and pattable. Really pretty on their own with a pair of babylegs! They are low rise and won’t stop your baby from bending, and they are so trim that they fit under clothes cut for disposables.

I use the SIOs and find the snap in inserts very useful because you can replace the insert when it’s only wet, which makes for an economical option, as well as less bulk in the changing bag.

Finally they are very absorbent and cope well with explosive breastfed poo!

You can find the Itti Bitti washable nappies in our shop and don’t forget you can use your discount code for a 10% discount – “friend” is the current code.

They’re even cheaper if you buy them by pack of 5, pretty much the price of a standard reusable nappy.

More ways Disana tie on organic nappy will save you money:

The soft fabric adjusts easily for babies of different sizes and shapes, slim or chubby legs alike, ideal if you’re planning to use the nappies for younger siblings.

It is one size from birth to potty so you can use the same nappies for years. For a newborn, fold the nappy over at the back and front to adjust it to suit your baby. If you do buy other reusable nappies as your baby grows (see note below about wrigglers!) they still make convenient back up nappies or extra stock for those days when every single reusable nappies are in the wash.

The Disana tie-on reusable nappy is an under-rated nappy. The knitted organic cotton is extremely soft. It feels like a snuggly sweater, something you do feel comfortable wrapping around your baby’s bottom.

They are made in Europe with no poppers or aplix it is a sturdy and simple reusable nappy.

The Disana tie on nappies aren’t among the most absorbent but as they are slim, it is easy to add a nappy booster.

These nappies can be fiddly to put on at first, especially with a wriggly baby. With the instructions and a bit of practice, you will soon get used to it. You can also cut the ties (be careful not to cut the nappy itself, just the ties) and use a nippa to secure it. Make sure the booster is placed under the nippa.

The Disana nappies are washed just as regular reusable nappies. Tie the ties loosely before washing to make sure they don’t end up twisted around your laundry.

With these nappies, you will need boosters and waterproof nappy wraps. Any of the nappy wraps will be suitable, including the Disana knitted wrap made of organic merino wool.

reusable nappy

You’ve decided that wearing a reusable nappy will be better for your baby. Congratulations on your choice. Now comes the next question, how many cloth nappies do I need to buy?

There is no hard and fast rule, the answer will depend on a few factors:

How old is your baby? Newborns need to be changed 8 to10 times a day so choosing quick washing nappies like terry or muslin nappies will save you time and money. Breastfed babies can be prone to liquid poo so you might want to plan a couple of extra waterproof wraps.

Will you be using a reusable nappy for every change or part of the time?

How often are you planning to wash your nappies? Every 1 to 3 days is the average. Will you wash the nappies separately or add them to your regular laundry?

How will you dry the nappies? Tumble drying is quick but more expensive.

What type of nappies will you be using? Flat nappies are quick to wash and dry but all-in-one take longer.

How many reusable nappies do I need to buy? The answer depends on the type of reusable nappy, on your child, and how you will be washing them. To allow for washing and drying time plus a few cloth nappies in stock, you can use these numbers as a guide:

20-25 nappies for a newborn

15-20 for a baby 6 months+

plus around 5 waterproof covers as they do not need to be changed every time.

Choosing a combination of slow drying and quick drying nappies can help you save money. It seems a lot but remember, switching to reusable nappy can save you £500 on average for a first child.
